I got a PT prompt a couple of weeks ago in a different league that was something along the lines of how I would change the rules of the sport. And so, I wanted to talk about some of the changes I would make to the game of soccer if I were in fact the grand overlord of intergalactic soccer.
First I would make the whole pitch enclosed, with walls and a ceiling. I would also make the ball much bigger, and much floatier, but still able to keep a straight line. More like a volleyball than a beach ball. Then of course, I would set the nets within the backs of each wall, such that it was more of a cave than a set of goalposts and a crossbar.
And finally, I would make it so that there were only three players, and they were actually cars.. oh shoot where have I heard this one before?
In all honesty though, I would make the pitch much shorter, and make each team have about 5 players plus a goalkeeper. I would also make the nets smaller, and the nets smaller. I do still like the whole wall idea but not a ceiling. The rest of the players would sit on a bench and wait for their turn. There would be on the fly changes, and so players would cycle in and out, matching units against each other. But the goalkeeper would probably stay in the whole time, though sometimes they might get switched out for another player near the end of a game if you’re losing. We would definitely cut penalty kicks, at least if you’re not on a breakaway, and instead the penalized team would lose access to that player for like 2 minutes. I think we’d have to break the game into 3 parts instead of 2 as well, it just makes sense that way.
Oh man! I did it again, didn’t I?
Maybe the game of soccer is just perfect, and there’s nothing to change after all! I guess I’ll have to go back to the drawing board and try again some other time.
