On Positional Distributions and Tactics
#1
So I’m looking at the Position Tracker, and trying to come up with what I think the most popular Tactic would be. There’s actually a pretty decent distribution of players, especially if you group the boxes together like I imagine the Graphic is implying. There’s roughly 30 players in each primary position then, excluding goaltenders, which makes sense, as there is never more than 1 goaltender on any given lineup.

There is however a huge discrepancy between the regular Midfielders, and the Attacking Midfielders on the wing, especially compared to the Defender and Wing Back splits. It seems as though most teams would end up with 4 players upfield then. Then the numbers work nicely for a CM and CDM pairing in the middle, but the real questions lie on the wings on defense.

On the left, the primary positions are almost perfectly split between LD and LWB, but many more players have LD as a secondary position than LWB. But on the right, RD is seemingly much more popular as a primary position than RWB, even though the secondary positions are a little closer in popularity.

So I would assume that teams either go in on Wing Backs, or go in on Defenders, but I could also see a good chunk of the teams running one Wing Back and One Defender, and routing their play up one of the wings in particular.

Of course I could probably just download the league file and see for myself, but theorizing is simply much more thought-provoking!
