Jacob Judges Team Branding
#1
Alright with the Draft being streamed tomorrow, I wanted to give my official ranking of my interest in teams, purely based on their branding. This is not in any way how I felt about my scouting conversations with them, or where I think I’ll end up, but just for fun. I am also 100% over-analyzing these logos as they appear on the forum home page, for content. I’m sure the official high resolution versions solve almost all of my uneducated critiques.

1. Tokyo/Cairo

I am 100% considering both brands, and also generally how cool I think that location is. This one is pretty easy, being two fantastic locations, some non-traditional colours done really well, and a couple of really fitting logos. I actually prefer the Cairo logo just based on simplicity, but the Tokyo colour scheme is great.

2. Hollywood/Kaapstad

Both have pretty common colour combinations, but they are both really clean, not too busy, and effectively represent both of the styles of their hypothetical real-life soccer branding region.

3. Shanghai/Magyar

Shanghai is perfect. I really have no comments on it. I love the pinkish purple of Magyar, but I’ve never really been a fan of that logo style, and I think it clashes with the colour a bit. But Shanghai’s is so good I had to rank it here.

4. Sao Paolo/Paris

These brands go really well together, make use of some classic colour schemes, and while they aren’t exactly the most innovative, they’re clean, they’re correct, and they do their job. A classic Red + Blue pairing, with White + Black. Architecturally focused, matching lettering, consistent border style. This is just right.

5. Tenochtitlan/Krung Thep

This is another case of one team being fantastic, and the other not clicking with me at all. I wouldn’t say Tenochtitlan’s is nearly as good as Shanghai’s, but it feels right. I think it would look better at lifesize scale, but crunched onto the forum home page, it’s a bit busy, which is essentially holding any of the wordy logos back. Krung Thep’s is fine, and the colours are great, but it’s boring.

6. Buenos Aires/Athenai

Essentially copy and paste the one above, except I like the Majors logo better, but the Minors logo is so much worse. The white on cream with no border just flash bangs me. Just a little border and I’m sure the blue and bronze colour scheme feels better.

7. Liffeyside/Rova Mpanjaka

Liffeyside’s doesn’t look at all like a soccer logo in my mind, but I see the vision, and it’s executed well. Rova Mpanjaka looks like a beer logo, and I guess it’s okay. I do like how the two brands work together with a nice green and orange.

8. Catalunya/Seoul
This time, it’s the Majors logo that holds me back, being a beer logo for sure this time. The Minors logo is pretty busy, but again, I can’t say it’s wrong by any means. The Red and Green works okay together, and I’m pretty neutral about the whole thing overall.

9. Reykjavik/North Shore

I wanted this to be one of my favourites. I respect the commitment to the double black, and the Reykjavik logo feels like it belongs in the same league as the Sao Paolo logo, and it seems like a real enough logo to me. I just have no idea what is going on with North Shore. Is it a witch being pinched by two crabs? Is it two ringed fingers holding a stick between them?

10. Schwarzwalder/Montreal

These logos belong together, and I appreciate the consistency. I just don’t like the execution of either of them. I get the sense I don’t like logos with fine lines, and this is very fine. The colours don’t pop, and they look like something I would make using a logo maker in a sports simulation game, and I’m super lazy.

11. Romana/London

This is definitely my stylistic subjectivity showing, but all of my complaints about the last one apply here on the Romana logo. I also can not for the life of me see what the actual image is supposed to be. It looks like someone ironing a cob of corn. Maybe some kind of strange spaceship and or bomb. London’s is fine, it’s just boring I guess.

12. Xelaju/Duekoue

The Majors logo is interesting. Every time I see it, it’s just a bird holding a logo that should have been from Rimworld. The whole thing also seems to have a faint white or grey border that just makes it look like it was cut out horribly from another image. Same effect on the Minors logo, but this one looks like something that CBC would make for an Olympic event broadcast. Or maybe an attraction at a zoo or museum. And no fault to either design really, but the two designs clash against each other and that makes my brain gag a bit.

Thanks for coming, and happy Draft Day (tomorrow)!
