The Rova Mpanjaka and Liffeyside Celtic both played their first games of the season last week.
Things could not have went much better for the organization.
A 3-1 win over Tokyo for the parent club kicked off the season. Carolien Miedema picked up right where she left off last season scoring a brace for the Celtic FC and leading our team to the opening stanza victory. This is a big moment for us as our Majors squad has matched last seasons win total just one game into the season. And on top of that the Tokyo club held a TPE advantage over us Tokyo TPE: 14,645 Liffey TPE: 11,614 at the time of the match. It goes to show the growth we've put into the club, and the moves we made promoting Snor Lax and Takeda Takahashi have already started to pay off.
In the minors the Rova Mpanjaka kicked off against the Montreal United squad. Last season Montreal finished with 13 wins and 42 points en route to a 4th place finish in the table. Rova finished slightly behind them with 12 wins and 39 points.
With the promotion of Lax there was some fear that the netminding wouldn't be as strong for Rova this season. After one game I think we've already put those fears to bed a bit as Rean Schwarzer posted a clean sheet in the first game of the season with a 1-0 win.
Our squad boasts 7 rookies. Schwarzer and another rookie Matt Turk led the way in the victory with Turk getting the goal. We really like the build of our squad and think the sky is the limit in our 2nd SSL season. I predict Rova will stay in the top half of the minor league table even with the youth movement we had. I also feel strongly that Liffeyside is going to surpise some people and could win a handful of more games before the season comes to a close.
