Living Up to a Legacy
#1
NASHVILLE -- Juliette Greer knows what it’s like to face significant amounts of pressure.

It’s not necessarily the sort of pressure that the media tends to place on exciting young talent, or the sort that comes from one’s coaches or teammates to contribute to the team and drive them to success, or even the sort of pressure that a player tends to put themselves under in order to continue developing and improving over the course of their career.

In Juliette’s case, the biggest source of pressure is from the legacy she’s been tasked with upholding.

“When your dad is one of the best players the SSL has ever seen, hell yeah, that’s a lot of pressure,” Greer says.

Juliette announced her eligibility for the Season 25 Simulation Soccer League Draft today, just hours after her father Jude Greer announced his upcoming retirement from soccer.

“Dad and the rest of my family have always been supportive,” Greer says. “Jude [Jr., Juliette’s older brother] was always more of a hockey player, so I guess I was always going to be the one to go into soccer. It’s just a good thing I’ve always liked it.”

Jude Greer will be entering his 13th and final SSL season at the same time that Juliette enters the SSL Academy system. During that time, Jude has managed an astonishing 103 assists across all competitions, tied for fifth most in SSL history. He’s served as captain for both Tokyo SC and the United States for roughly ten seasons, and will likely retire as one of the league’s all-time icons despite only lifting a single trophy, the Season 14 SSL Cup, in his career to date.

Juliette says that she knows that even if her family isn’t pressuring her to reach the same heights, the comparisons are going to be inevitable.

“Dad and I aren’t the same kind of player,” Greer says. “He’s a fullback, I’m a midfielder. He creates chances, I score goals. But just because we share a name, people are already talking about me like I’m the next Zizou Lopta. It’s…a lot.”

Early scouting reports suggest that Greer is a natural goalscorer, making runs from deep in midfield to attack the opposing goalkeeper’s area. One SSL Academy scout likens Greer’s style of play to “a sledgehammer.”

“She starts from so deep in the midfield, then comes diving up the middle,” another academy scout says. “If she ends up being anywhere near as fast as her dad, she’s going to be an absolute dynamo.”

Juliette has a long road ahead of her, but it’s safe to say she’s game.

“I’m not going to relax until I hit the top,” Juliette says.
