KINGSTON, Jamaica -- It took ten professional matches, but Juliette Greer is finally on the board.

Right on the stroke of the sixtieth minute of Port Royal’s recent 2-0 victory over Istanbul FK, Greer netted her first goal in the Simulation Soccer League.

The relief on Greer’s face was plain to see from just about anywhere in the stadium as she ran over to her teammates to celebrate. Even long after the game, Greer was all smiles.

“It just feels so good to finally get one,” Greer said in the locker room after the match. “I’ve been putting in so much work, and now it’s finally paid off. It’s been a long time coming.”

The move that got Greer her goal started from deep. Greer’s partner in defensive midfield, Bob Ross, hit a long pass up the right wing to Zay Bailey, who carried the ball almost all the way to the end line before passing the ball in toward attacking midfielder Alejandro Hunt. Hunt then turned and laid off a pass to Greer, who had slipped away from her marker and was making a run into the center of the area. Greer planted her foot and struck the ball first-time, sending it skidding past the Istanbul goalkeeper to double Port Royal’s tally.

“It was a hell of a move,” Greer said. “Bob made that move from the start, it was an incredible pass. I just started looking for the opening the moment he hit the ball. And then Zay and Ale [Alejandro] set it up for me perfectly. If I’d missed the goal on a chance like that, I think I might have just retired on the spot!”

Earlier in the match, prolific Port Royal striker Vincent Haye continued his run of dominance with a goal just before the half. The strike, a close-range effort delivered via a pinpoint pass from the newly-recruited Korean winger Anneong-Jiay Weaver, takes Haye to seven so far on the season, trailing only Victoria Falls’ Vivi Nefertari and Armero Staple among the upcoming class of Season 25.

“It’s been an absolute treat to work with a goalscorer like Vince,” Greer said. Wherever he ends up in the SSL, they’re getting a real one, I can tell you that.”

It’s been a long time coming for Greer, who has had several great chances this season but had failed to find the net. Her xG of 1.37, while not necessarily impressive on its own, was the highest of any prospect that had yet to score a match going into Matchday 10. Several players who had joined the academy after Greer, including her own teammate Weaver, had managed to find themselves on the scoresheet before Greer finally broke her duck.

“AJ [Anneong-Jiay] scoring in their first game was a bit of a mixed feeling for me,” Greer said. “Obviously I was happy for them, and I always love it when we win, no doubt about it. But when you’ve been trying to score for that long, and then this other person comes along and just gets one right away, that stung a bit. But I’ve got one for myself now, so it doesn’t matter.” she added.

Greer’s drought hadn’t gone unnoticed by the larger SSL sphere. While some personalities had offered support to the Japanese-American prospect, others were less charitable. In particular, A.C. Romana midfielder Ryan van Eyndhoven has repeatedly made mention of Greer’s struggles on social media--something Greer has most assuredly noticed.

“I just think it’s interesting that a guy who’s only scored one goal himself this season is talking,” she said, smirking.

When asked if the beef would affect their ability to play together should she be drafted by Romana, Greer shrugged.

“Nah, I don’t think so. I like to think I’m professional enough to work with him regardless,” she said. “Though if he and I do end up on the same team, he may want to wear some double-thickness shin guards in training, just to be safe,” she added, the smirk returning.

van Eyndhoven isn’t the only figure who’s been vocal about Greer’s inability to score. Several pundits across the soccer space have been weighing in over the last few weeks. Noted moron Alexi Lalas’ offhand “nepo-baby” remark grabbed the social media zeitgeist when it first emerged. Though he later apologized, Lalas later redoubled his criticisms, saying on a recent episode of State of the Union that Greer “should spend less time practicing her goal celebrations and actually try scoring some goals to celebrate.” (Lalas has yet to comment on Greer’s goal against Istanbul.)

Lalas was joined by Taylor Twellman, who told ESPN that “she’s definitely no Messi” before going off on a thirty-minute diatribe about how Inter Miami deserve to be given the MLS Cup every season as a matter of course.

Greer spared no time in making her opinion known regarding the commentary from the pundits in question.

“Does anyone actually care what these so-called ‘analysts’ have to say?” Greer said. “Paul Merson never left my dad alone, and everyone just went along with their lives. Why should anyone give these people any mind--especially when it’s an overgrown fanboy like Twellman, or a professional troll with fascist sympathies like Lalas?”

Regardless of the opinions of the more outspoken members of the media, Greer was able to help her team to a hugely important victory. The 2-0 win took Port Royal to fourth in the SSL Academy table, eight points back of runaway leaders Victoria Falls. With two sides, Istanbul and Adowa Accra, already out of the running for the title, the final four matchdays will be of vital importance if Port Royal aim to launch a shocking, albeit heavily unlikely, last-minute title push.

For Greer, though, what matters is that the hardest goal of her career is finally behind her.

“They say the first goal is always the hardest to score,” Greer said. “And I’ve got that first one now. So hopefully that means I can start to blast them in a little more often now.”

Asked if she had any messages for the SSL scouts in attendance, Greer said simply:

“There’s more where that came from.”
