Reyk Vets Approach Season with Guarded Hope
#1
Another campaign fast approaches.

The mood in the Reykjavik United clubhouse is a mixed one.

There is a buzz of excitement among the younger players – those who will be making their first appearance for the majors club and those who, while have already made their debuts, are still seeking the opportunity to fully assert themselves as a known commodity on this, the highest stage in global simulation soccer.

The mood is more tempered among the Reykjavik veterans. They carry a heavier burden than their younger counterparts. They have already become established names in the SSL, so theirs is a responsibility to the club above the self. They have already experienced several seasons worth of successes on the pitch, so they understand the passion and pride with which the Reykjavik fan base follows the team.

They also understand the weight of the ongoing disappointment in failing to finish even near the top of the table during the last couple of seasons. They also understand that, on paper and among the punditry at least, no one is predicting that Reykjavik will do so this season. And they feel a responsibility to do more and to be better.

Of course, if championships were decided by preseason predictions and by editorial opinions, there would be no reason to play the games. And with the games about to begin, anything can happen. It’s just that Reykjavik’s margin for error may be slimmer than others’. But who is to say Reykjavik cannot play more perfectly than initially expected?

Even if the club is not predicted to finish as league champions, the fan base still measures the success of any given season by whether the team was within striking distance of it. There is a fiercely guarded – and veiled – optimism that the club can make noise this upcoming season.

We will soon find out if there is any substance behind this faint hope.

Let the games begin.
