ACADEMY TASK #5: What is a Striker?
#1
Hello hello everybody, I'm Bloodless/Dante/Wolfe/Sawyer and welcome to my first mini-media series in SSL, the "What is?" series!

Today we are going to take a snapshot look at the Striker position within the league, and specifically how people view the Striker position! Definitely not because I'm a Striker. There are a plethora of talented Strikers within the SSL and I figured I would interview a variety of people at different positions and try to analyze trends in thinking, before coming up with a small checklist/definition at the end for what makes a Striker based on the communities most prominent thoughts!

First and foremost, I will tell you what makes a Striker from my own perspective:

Player: Dante Von Wolfe
User: @Bloodless
Position: Striker (ST)
League Job(s): Commentary Team

Answer:
Goals. The best Striker I can imagine in my head is one who scores goals, creates opportunities, and ultimately is able to both finish plays within the goal area and capitalize on mistakes made within the opponents half. I understand that this doesn't always mean that the Striker scores goals, but I do firmly believe that the best Strikers prove their existence through goals ... otherwise you may as well just be a glorified CAM with a different, albeit shorter name. To put final thoughts on it, I see Strikers as a spearhead of sorts. Push the opposition and provide offensive pressure, while making and converting opportunities in the oppositions half.

Analysis:
I'll be skipping most of the analysis part for this one solely because it's me, but the one thing I'd say to take away is that I see Strikers as the spearheads of a team.

Player: Ignignokt
User: @AustinP0027
Position: Centre Defensive Midfielder (CDM)
League Job(s): N/A

Answer:
"What is a striker to me? Well, that depends on which team you are on.

Against me? A striker is a temporary obstacle whose purpose is to inflate my tackle counts. They run and gesture towards my goal, and then I remind them that the Moon has mastered this sport long before they learned to tie their cleats. On the Moon, we abandoned the concept of strikers millennia ago. Why dedicate an entire lifeform to scoring goals when you can simply possess the ball forever? Primitive Earth thinking.

A striker on my team? I'll permit it as a means of cultural preservation. While I perform the important work of preventing our team from conceding goals, they wander up-field collecting glory and compliments from you simple Earthlings. If they score, acceptable. If not, I shall continue carrying this team from the backline, as is the Moon tradition."

Analysis:
Ignignokt (Yeah I had to copy and paste that one lol) has quite the interesting take on the Striker position, seeing Strikers as nothing more then an obstacle from their perspective. An obsolete position only survived by those seeking personal glory in selfish manners. In a sense, I can agree with their perspective. In football we've seen a variety of positions grow in versatility, and the primary Striker position falls under that as well. We see Striker's that honestly work better as CAM's and fulfill the same role as a Striker up top with a different skillset. A great first analysis.

Position: Left Wingback (LWB)
League Job(s): Cutest SSL Player

Answer:
I believe a striker is someone who is always looking for the finish. Someone you can never usually count on until the end, than he does what he does best.

Analysis:
A short but sweet answer from one of our favourite young wingbacks within the league. It feels like a bit of a personal shot at me to say that you can never count on a Striker until the end (joking) but inferring a little deeper into o1playz's statement, I think they are trying to say that a Striker is someone who typically abandons the defensive aspect of the game almost completely. They are a non-factor. Once again, o1playz like Ignignokt brings up the fact that they are people who score. Noted.

Player: Jimothy Erickson
User: @GingerJLD
Position: Central Defender (CD)
League Job(s): Simmer/Post Production

Answer:
A striker is a player who should be expected to not only score goals but help track back and elevate the whole team.

Analysis:
A typical answer from a defender jealous of my--- I mean, a Striker's scoring abilities! Other then the scoring part, Ginger actually gave the antithesis of what o1playz stated which brings an interesting divide in schools of thought. Should a Striker be someone who specializes in offence? Or should Striker just be the best all-around player capable of diversely filling any role up top, from attacking to defending to being the lynchpin when building up plays. I think depending on the style of the team and the caliber of players amongst a collection of players, there are certainly benefits for both of these schools of thought. For example, if you have one good player and everyone else fills in around them naturally and slots into specific roles, that can be a path to success. If the players you have only each are truly capable of fulfilling one role, then logically you wouldn't force them into roles which aren't suited to their talents. Let's see where the rest of the players fall on this.

Answer:
For me a Striker is someone that as clutch genes, it will make their teams win either by their goal or by their work up the pitch, that scores goals yes[,] but scores consistently. A Striker is the designated hero of the team, they are expected to score, doesn't mean they only do that as lazy strikers are a nuisance on a team.

Analysis:
Being my Academy Manager in Istanbul, I thought Afrhite would lean more strongly towards Striker's being scoring specialists ... but nah! Guess I did enough in terms of passing and playmaking to satisfy him lol. Particularly because Afrhite specifies that lazy strikers who only score are just a hinderance, likely because it's like playing down a player in some situations. Afrhite also introduced an alternate way of summarizing what we know so far about Strikers. They score a lot and it's their job; Afrhite referred to them as "designated heroes" and as someone who has "clutch genes" which makes sense, considering a Striker is likely to take the most shots on goal, especially in critical moments of matches it makes a ton of sense.

Answer:
Striker is an interesting position, it is probably the position that attracts a certain type of player the most. Someone who has a massive ego, some might say selfish, hungry for stats, awards and applause. However the best strikers eventually learn when they need to be humble, when they need to wait, when they need to pass. The attack of a team lives and dies with them, the team is nothing without them, however they are also nothing without their team. A striker may get 1 moment. A singular attack that works out they way it is supposed to, 90 minutes of your team giving their everything boiled down to a single moment. If you miss, everything your team did for you would have been for nothing, can you take the pressure? I believe you need a massive ego to say yes to that question.

Analysis:
Everyone's favourite Academy Matchday Commentator also generously added his two cents to the conversation upon request, and ... while, I'd be lying if I said the first part really felt like he was describing me lmao. For the second time, I feel like I'm catching strays! Despite that, Lumberjack is certainly correct in his analysis. People don't play Striker just to pass, they play Striker to score. If they wanted to be a Playmaker of sorts up top, then they'd be much better off playing CAM and focusing on guiding their team to victory through semi-balanced play. Striker's however do tend to be more egotistical and as mentioned in other answers given from other players, they seek to prove their skill through goals and justify their talent. It's not just a difference in how the game is played, but a fundamental difference in how a Striker approaches the game which makes them unique. It seems that those who have the biggest ego's tend to be those who can handle the shine of the spotlight which makes them naturally adept at playing the vaunted Striker position.

Lumberjack also underscored the importance for adaptability up top, being able to pass when the situation calls for it and giving themselves up for the sole sake of winning. Certainly understandable, but it seems a touch contradictory to the point Lumberjack brings up and begs the question. Would you rather have two average players working together or one undeniably elite Striker on that last attack of the game? Which is more important, maintaining a base level of teamwork and cohesion or individual talent? I get the feeling that a Striker would choose the latter option every time. I know I would, because in that one moment in front of the goal what's needed to succeed is a strong mentality and unwavering faith in oneself rather then reliance on a teammate. Or at least, that's my thoughts/interpretation.

Answer:
A wannabe rival.
Jk!
A striker is the person who has the easiest time breaking behind lines of the defense to try and score, often the target of chance playmaking passes. Their constant threat while the team is in possession also means other areas of the final 1/3 become weaker to other attackers. When the defense breaks down, shots can be made, and the striker usually has the best position in front of the goal.

Analysis:
My rival and buddy both within and outside of the SSL gave a rather sterile answer, but logically speaking it is the simplest, clearest one yet. Break down the opposition's defence with well-timed runs and position themselves where they can take a shot at the goal. Although Xyan really describes a Striker as a sort of decoy which makes pushing the ball up the field easier, they do concede that a Striker typically has the best positioning in front of the goal ... Xyan must love Shadow Striker's XD

Answer:
A striker is someone who generally leads the offensive charge. Their job is to stay back on defense and take any passes to the house.

Analysis:
The busy bear CROneybear BEARLY gave us an answer! >:3
Jokes aside, at least his simple answer gives me an easy analysis! Croney is very much of the school of thought that a Striker just needs to stay out of the way of the defence, take any balls that land in their direction and get it out of their half, and be the driving force behind the offensive attack. Simple, and straight to the point. Striker's attack. Score goals. And act as a switch point between offence and defence.

Player: Marcel Voda
User: @Daleks
Position: CM, CDM, CAM, ST (this season I was played as both CAM and ST only)
League Job(s): BoD, SHA/MAG assistant manager

Answer:
The striker is obviously the main person responsible for making goals happen. However, it is not necessary for him to be the one that scores the goal. With football being a team game, the correct decisions within a game are those who enable the team to win. I myself always loved the positions of target forward, pressing forward, and of course the famous false nine. The type of striker roles that turn the striker into more of a creative, space creating force, that makes the team around himself better. When the striker is often the one who is the biggest star on the team, it is always interesting to see those who instead opt to put the spotlight on those around them.

Analysis:
While acknowledging that Striker's are individual's response for creating the most goals, Daleks once again points out that different style Strikers are equally as valuable as those who solely focus on scoring. Creating opportunities, acting as a lynchpin on the top of the offence, and setting up plays while drawing defenders in and creating weak points in the defence are all valuable things a Striker does which can help a team win. Some Strikers survive in the spotlight whilst others thrive by purposefully surrendering the spotlight to other players. It just goes to show that there is never one right way to play a position, and I believe that does carry over to FM quite adequately.

Answer:
A striker is the tip of the spear. Their job is to continually put pressure on the backline whether that means pressing opposing centerbacks or making runs in behind the defense. Having an athletic center forward opens up a ton of option. The threat of a speedy forward pushes CD’s towards their own goal and opens up the center of the field. A striker who is great in the air adds vertical space for wingers to attack with crosses. Ultimately, much of their impact comes down to a few moments in a game where they have to strike the ball cleanly. It creates a lot of pressure when each tough carries so much weight so your striker needs to have a strong mentality.

Analysis:
Funny enough, unprompted Lpapi gave the exact same answer I did at the start--- well, the same comparison! Strikers are the tip of the spear, meant to strike through the defence and pierce it. Of course making runs behind the defence to position themselves to take shots is apart of the Striker M.O., but Lpapi brings up an excellent point. Striker's are usually targets for crosses, especially one's who can jump high which helps the team as a whole when a player can win in the air and helps diversify the ways in which a player can attack. Similar to Lumberjack, the BoD member Lpapi pointed to the fact that Striker's only tend to have a few key plays per game. A couple moments in which they can use their specialized skillset to turn a game on it's head. Those few moments are the sole reason why Strikers get paid big money in real life, and as multiple people including Lpapi have either hinted to or pointed out, Striker's need to have a strong mentality and confidence in themselves to be a true difference maker.

So what is a Striker?
Of course the whole purpose of this Q&A with various league members was to define what a Striker is. We will get to that in just a moment, but first I wanted to categorize the schools of thought from our respondents so we can better understand why they gave their answers. I could break each persons thoughts down even further, but suffice to say that is pointless considering the analysis I've already done. But a common theme I noticed arose from Ginger and o1playz responses, which I coincidentally put one after the other, a random stroke of luck for the purposes of this article!
(Note that these are my interpretations of what was said, not direct quotes).

O1playz's (Goal Scorer) School of Thought: Striker's abandon other aspects of the game to fully capitalize on their scoring abilities. Their sole purpose is to score.

Ginger's (Playmaker) School of Thought: Striker's are players who score goals, but also need to contribute on defence. In theory, they should be the first line of defence and the ring leader on offence.

Goal Scorer Ideology (5/10 Respondents):
- Bloodless
- o1playz
- Xyan
-  CROney3
-  Lpapi

Playmaker Ideology (5/10 Respondents):
- AustinP0027
- GingerJLD
- Afrhite
-  Daleks
- McLumberjack

Alright. First, I know how this looks! It seems like I picked people who would have the same view as me or something of that sort, but I assure you that I randomly sent 10 messages of this. The number of respondents was not on purpose, nor was the results which dictate how our checklist of what makes a Striker predetermined by me in this article ... who would have thought it'd be a tie? I asked all of these people because they are buds I've met from SSL/ISFL, and I had prior contact with all of them which made getting some responses easy!

Speaking of all these people, huge shoutout to all 9 people who took the time to respond to my question!
With all that being said, the definition of a Striker according to this mini-census!

- A Striker is a Goal Scorer first and foremost, a player who takes advantage of limited shooting opportunities and converts those to secure victory for their team.
- A Striker is a player with a strong mentality, one who can handle the intense pressure of a game hinging on the few opportunities they have to score.
- A Striker pushes into the opposition's half and acts as the tip of the spear, drawing attention and creating space to help build the attack.
- A Striker exploits open space to receive passes and take shots, usually focusing on putting themselves in the best positions to score.
- A Striker doesn't need an overwhelming ego, but they do need high confidence in their capabilities. They play and push the defence aggressively.
- A Striker acts as the switch point between offence and defence, and is the driving force behind the offence.
- A Striker that is elite knows when to pass the ball in order to maximize both points, and their own opportunities to score.

Thank you everybody for reading! This was pretty entertaining to put together, and although it took me longer then anticipated I think I'm quite happy with the end-result!
