S5 Expansion Update + Structure Changes
#11
QUOTE (sarah @ Jul 11 2022, 11:14 AM)
I'm afraid that this league is making too many substantial changes, with an expansion currently happening every season and substantial structural changes being made alongside it while not allowing things to marinate at least a little.

How does this league plan to maintain interest levels in league two?  Might the constant threat of expansion drafts ruin the user experience as they try and find a clubhouse where they can get eatablished in? How many applications are there for management every expansion cycle? How would this league deal with flight of talent and prospects from one league to another just as cause of relegation?

To address a couple comments.

Maintaining Interest in a 2nd Division - The Majority of people who answered our survey, as well as Managers, wanted to see Pro-Rel vs Conferences or a Development League. Now, with Pro-Rel, more teams are going to have games of interest late into the season for either trying to gain promotion (and a Div 2 Trophy) or trying to stave off relegation. We will monitor this each season though as we do with anything we try and implement.

Constant Expansion - as highlighted in our call for expansion managers, we based that decision each season based off of active player counts and how many roster spaces are available, while also looking at expected draft class size. We have held off of recruitment plan ideas because we don't want to over-grow, but also, most of our growth has been very organic so far. To add, one positive that we are getting closer to is that S2 expansion saw existing teams losing 3 players, we are nearing the point where future expansions may only see teams lose 1 player. As well, the more teams we have, the more able we are to handle an influx of people. We are starting to see more and more people who have found the league from a Youtube Video suggestion, and we expect that to keep happening in the future. We are doing our utmost to try and avoid ever needing to expand by 4 teams in an offseason, because that is not the kind of shock we want to our league stability.

Each expansion cycle we get approximately 2 to 4 expansion manager applications. For this window specifically, we had 3. The individual who did not get a team, was more than qualified, capable, and also mentioned in their app they were more than willing to push off their app to a future expansion opportunity.

Flight of players - That is something we will monitor, one piece of feedback we have received in the past was that the league didnt have enough player movement in FA. So we want to monitor this in the coming seasons. As well, we added loans last season, and we do hope and expect that loans this season might occur due to that very reason. Again, we are going to monitor this and take feedback to see how it goes.

We GRSL officially now!

To touch base on this. It is my understanding that GRSL died for many different reasons, and that pro-rel was the straw that broke the camels back. GRSL was a 1 man team running the show and doing everything. As well, in their expansion, they used bots to fill rosters because they didnt have the player base.

One alternative to Pro-Rel that was discussed was a Dev League. Suggestions with the Dev League suggested that we use bots to fill rosters. A few major issues with Dev Leagues are as follows:

1) Bots - it is not fun to play against them
2) It doubles the number of teams. The league would have gone from 12-24 teams.
3) Either we need 12 new managers, OR existing managers now have twice the duties in setting lineups, managing players, etc.
4) maybe one of the biggest, but simming a division with more than 5 matchdays in a matchday is just not feasible. One big item of feedback this seasons has been from simmers wanting less matches per day as it becomes a major undertaking to sim. Maxing our Divisions at 10 teams, minimum 6 teams, allows us to have more condensed matchdays that are more feasible to the sim team both now, and into the future.

As always, if anyone has any comments or concerns they would like the board to look at and consider. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us. Either on the forum or on Discord. We absolutely love getting league-wide feedback because it helps us get a larger perspective from our player-base. Looking forward to a great end of S4, and a new chapter in S5 //files.jcink.net/html/emoticons/smile.gif
