With the application deadline having passed, but the managers and orgs not yet announced I thought it was the perfect time to build hype for the new expansion teams. I am by no means an expert when it comes to locations of current teams, but I relied heavily on the below map ( which was included in the expansion job post) to draw my own conclusions. In reviewing this map, I decided that Africa, Scandinavia and Australia were underrepresented. While this may be true, the landscape shifts dramatically when you factor in the Academy teams, pictured in the second map. I’m unsure if an academy team being located in Sydney would stop an Org from popping up in Melbourne for example, but lets for the sake of argument assume that it does. What would the numbers look like by region then?
I haven’t spot checked this, but I think the below gives a good indication of teams by region.
NA/Caribbean: 2 Majors, 1 Minor, 1 Academy
SA/CA: 3 Major, 0 Minor, 1 Academy
Africa: 0 Major, 4 Minor, 2 Academy
Europe: 5 Major, 4 Minor, 2 Academy
Asia: 2 Major, 2 Minor, 1 Academy
Oceania: 0 Major, 1 Minor, 1 Academy
Looking over this list it is pretty damn clear that Europe is oversaturated generally speaking. This was also backed up when I asked the discord where they thought the expansions should go, with 9 of the 14 suggestions being Europe. The suggestions were, Nordic, Slavic, Scandinavian, Belgium, Portugal, Austria, Netherlands, Scotland and Greenland. India was a popular response also, but the chat seemed to be more in favour of relocating Kaapstad so that org could be Hollywood and Bollywood. The Middle East, Singapore and Casablanca were the other genuine suggestions, then there were a few joke suggestions like, the north and south pole as well as Christmas and Easter Island.
The lowest population regions seem to be Oceania, South America, Central America and Africa seems to be lacking a major presence. So let’s dive into each of those regions a little deeper shall we?
Oceania already has Sydney and North Shore, meaning Australia and New Zealand are covered. These are easily the two “biggest” countries in Oceania, and any new Org looking to expand to the region would likely have to choose from Papua New Guinea, Fiji or the Solomon Islands. Any smaller than that and you are getting down to 300,000 or fewer residents. Admittedly New Zealand is behind Papua New Guinea in terms of population, but I think it is unsurprising they got a team first.
Looking at South America, Football giants Brazil and Argentina are already covered, Throw in Medellin, and Colombia is represented also. I think this leaves good options in Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador. These would be some colourful options with varied options for branding. It is no secret that South America has a massive Football culture and I think we should likely see more teams there moving forwards, whether that is in this expansion or the next.
Africa too has a fantastic culture of Football and many vibrant nations to choose from. I think potentially the geopolitical situation in some countries has put people off from expanding here, while this could also be said of some of the middle east. Let's start by crossing off the African nations with teams already, Egypt, Madagascar, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ghana. To me, this leaves Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Congo DR and Cameroon all within the top 50 Fifa rankings and all without a team in the SSL. I won’t speculate on which of these would make the best recommendation, but with so many countries in the top 50 of the world rankings and no major team in the SSL, I think it is only a matter of time until we see one spring up in Africa.
As always though I am keen to hear your thoughts. Do you have any better suggestions for anyone who may have applied for expansion, but hasn’t yet locked in on a location? Feel free to throw your suggestions below and maybe we can help someone find the ideal spot.
