While Stockholm hasn't had the best start for their first half of the academy season, there is still a lot of positives on the team, and good things to look forward for. As of the end of the seventh matchday, they sit in fifth place, 10 points behind a Jakarta team that has yet to lose a game yet. For my PT this week, I want to look at all the players on the team (not including legends), and show how well they are playing this season, and why they give Stockholm a chance to have a stronger second half if a little more luck goes our way.
Starting in goal with Swiss Cheese. While Stokholm is tied for giving up the most goals out of all the teams, its hard to put the blame on Cheese. They'd definitely had to face a lot of tough shots and lead the league in total saves and being second in expected number of goals prevented. They also have the second lowest expected save percentage which just further proves that their job is a lot harder than a lot of other goalkeepers in the league and if Stockholm can shore up their defense, we can expect more clean sheets out of Cheese.
Next up is arguably the best player on the team and arguably the best defender in the academy Captain Metalbeard. Metalbeard leads other defenders (non-legends) in the league in many key categories like distance run, successful crosses, header percentage, interceptions, and probably some more that I'm missing. They have the highest average rating on the team as well. While they started off in more of a fullback role, the team needed more offense so even with a role switch, they have been performing really well. If there is a best xi for the academy team at the end of the season, definitely expect to see Metalbeard on that shortlist.
Next up is Butters Stoch who plays more of a deep lying playmaker role for the team. Their passing game helps connect the whole team together and as the sole defensive midfielder they are fed the ball a lot. This leads them to have the most successful and attemped passes in the entire league out of non legend players and they have made the most of their passes with them totaling 80 progressive passes which leads the league by quite a bit. Stockholm's formation is a bit unconventional but Stoch has made the most of their opportunities.
Now going into the offensively inclined players, while the defense only has one non-legend player, the offense is made entirely of real players which adds a lot of options for the team. Felix Dono is the other player in the central midfield for Stockholm and they have had a direct contribution to the score board for the team. They have five goal contributions, most of which come from assists. Its surprising that they don't have more assists considering they also lead the league in key passes.
Now for the right winger, my own player Daan Wouters. Don't think my player was fast enough to start the season and the reroll happened a little too late so we haven't really seen the effects of it yet. One of the lowest average ratings in the league though, so definitely needs to pick up his performance so that Metalbeard isn't carrying the team too much on the right side. Playing as more of an inside forward though, hopefully can pick up some more shots on target.
Bonnibel Bubblegum is one of the top strikers in the league and is very much in the race for the golden boot. Despite sitting a lot lower in expected goals, Bubblegum has six goals in seven games and has definitely taken the lead striker role. They have the most shots on goal in the league as well, just need to put themselves in some better positions to score and they could easily go first place for goals scored. The other striker Leif Janson joined a little later into the season so they only have five games played but they have helped provide for Bubblegum as an advanced forward. They have a goal and an assist apiece but if anything they have been underperforming their expected goals and expected assists so they just need to get a little lucky to get those numbers up.
