Cheese Check-In: Addressing the Holes in Swiss Cheese's Game
#1
After avoiding the media for a little while, Swiss Cheese has recently had a respectable enough game to face the press and take some questions regarding the start of their career as a goalkeeper. It's their first-ever media appearance since signing with Stockholm, and there's quite a bit to talk about already.

Press Member: "Swiss, through 7 games, you've been rather polarizing with 2 clean sheets but also 15 goals conceded, tied for most in the Academy. That averages out to 3 goals allowed per game in the 5 games you've allowed any. Is there anything in particular that's been causing this inconsistency?"

Cheese: "Ok, so in the first game I played, I actually had a bit of a misunderstanding. You see, I'm rather new to the sport and still wrapping my head around how it works, and I remember reading online that the objective of the game is to get the ball into the net, right? Like, that's how you get points? So I thought, "ok, easy enough", and allowed those 3 goals, thinking I was doing really well. So imagine my surprise when, after the game, I find out we lost. It's actually one particular net we want the ball to enter, the one on the other side of the field, and not just either of them. I think my trainers were trying to explain this to me during halftime, but it just wasn't clicking then. I understand much better now."

Press Member: "...uhhh, well, good to hear you've cleared that up, but you've remained rather inconsistent since then. Is it still a rules misunderstanding or...?"

Cheese: "No, no that was just at the start. I'll admit there are a lot of aspects of goalkeeping I'm still trying to improve at, alongside just bettering my conditioning. I'm not terribly fast or a very good processor yet, and I'm finding the fact that attackers can quite literally shoot the ball through me to be more troublesome than anticipated. Rather than working on these issues, however, I actually tried to use them as a sort of hidden competitive advantage for a little while. It didn't work out, though, so I've since resumed training."

Press Member: "What? You thought those weaknesses provided you with an advantage? How?"

Cheese: "You see, while having those weaknesses in my game definitely wasn't preferable, I thought that having an abundance of them could actually help me in a way. My thinking was that by providing attackers with a number of ways to beat me, perhaps they would be struck with decision paralysis. "Cheese is pretty slow, do I just kick towards the opposite end of the net? Or maybe straight through them? Their decision-making is suspect too, though, maybe I can just kick anywhere and they'll dive the wrong way?" See, the idea was they'd get bogged down by these choices and they'd hesitate just long enough for our defenders to re-position themselves or at least give me time to try and read where the attacker's about to send the ball. Like I said earlier, it hasn't really worked, and I've gone away from that strategy with the coaching staff's gentle suggestion to actually just improve my skillset. Personally, I thought it was an interesting idea, but not every idea's gonna be a winner, you know?"

Press Member: "Oh... that's certainly a umm, unique approach to the game. Well, we are looking forward to seeing how you perform in the future with this new direction. Thanks for coming out here tonight, and good luck with your upcoming matches."

Swiss Cheese exits the podium, leaving those in attendance with far more questions than answers. On the bright side, some of Cheese's other stats should give Stockholm fans reason to hope: they've at least made a lot of saves, with 34 recorded, despite their above comments. Although this interview does cast into question how many of those saves were even on purpose, given Cheese's... still-developing understanding of goalkeeping. Regardless, there will be many eyes on Swiss going forward, looking to see if their new training regimen leads to less volatile performances.
