Welcome back to the incredibly hotly anticipated series on SSL organizations as orchids. This week’s organization, thanks to a timely discord reaction from Pyro, is USP/ASP! Perhaps one of the most well known stories of growth in the league, this organization has a legendary history of rising from dark days to become one of the perennial powerhouses of the league.
We will begin with the majors squad in São Paulo. When writing this series I’ve balanced my selections with a few criteria; first and foremost I go by vibe, but I also look secondarily at things like location - whether there’s an orchid native to the location that matches the vibe - and coloration, because matching the logo colors is a fun little bonus. For USP, I certainly had no shortage of location-inspired options. Brazil is home to a bonkers number of orchids, over 2500 according to the Google machine. So with my options wide open, I looked for something that would mirror USP’s history of dominance grown from humble origins. This led me to Cattleya coccinea. I don’t think I’ve done a cattleya yet in this series, but they are one of the most popular orchids for a reason - they are known as the “queen of the orchids” mostly because of their show stopping blooms. C. coccinea is usually a tiny plant with absolutely massive flowers in assorted shades of scarlet. I felt this “big show from tiny plant” was appropriate for a team that went from underdog to dynasty. Here’s a photo!

That will bring us to the minors squad in Paris. France certainly has native orchids (as I mentioned in a previous edition of this series, there are native orchids *almost* everywhere on the planet) but they are largely terrestrial and none of them really scream “Paris ooh la la.” So I looked away from regional selections and more at ooh la la selections, which brought me to the Paphiopedilum genus. These orchids, also known as Venus slippers, are native to Southeast Asia, and they are a real mixed bag. Some grow on the ground, some are true epiphytes, but that’s all scientific blah blah that you probably don’t care about even if you’re actually reading this.
I DIGRESS. The specific paph I have chosen for ASP is Paphiopedilum delenatii! While not French, P delenatii is named after a French orchid enthusiast, Delenat, who was the first person to bloom this orchid in Europe. It is a gorgeous, elegant orchid with a very pleasant fragrance, and to me, it seems very ooh la la. Here is a photo of it!
