"McNeil! You got a phone call! Make it quick, we've got afternoon drills to do... ten minutes!" The gaffer yells out to Seth from his office.
'You'd think by now in this era of time the team would be able to communicate with their own cell phones instead of having to use the lone phone in the manager's office,' Seth thought to himself.
"Thanks Gaf, I'll be quick," Seth assured him.
He picked up the phone that was left down on the desk.
"Hello?" Seth asked inquisitively.
“Ah, Mr. McNeil! A pleasure to speak with you, sir. We’re very relieved we could finally get a hold of you,” came the voice from the other line. The man was very well-spoken but you could definitely tell English wasn’t his native tongue. Chinese perhaps?
“Yeah, sorry about that. Someone might have to talk with ownership to modernize the club house a bit. Anyways, what can I do for you?”
“I’ll cut right to the chase as I know you’re a busy man. I’m calling on behalf of BYD.”
“The car company?”
“Precicely. We’d love for you to come visit us for a test drive and have you in one of our commercials to sell our new flagship model that we’ll be launching next year. It shouldn’t take longer than a day and we’re prepared to offer you $1,000,000.”
“Whoa. That’s like a third of my salary for a day of shooting?”
“We hope this means you approve?”
“Hell yes—” Seth cleared his throat. “Er, I mean the terms sound satisfactory,” he finished before thinking something. “BYD is in China?”
“Correct,” he confirmed.
“Well I think you might be a year late. Shanghai moved up to Division One. The team doesn’t play in China this season. I’m not sure when I can find time to do this.”
“Yes sir, we do have a branch division in Japan. We coordinated with your agent that you have an upcoming match in Tokyo at the latter half of your season. We would do it then,” the man clarified.
“Ah! Excellent! I mean… I think I can find a day while we’re over in your neighbourhood. And sorry, I didn’t catch your name?” Seth asked.
“My apologies. My name is Wang Chuanfu. And with that, I believe our time is up. I don’t want to get you in trouble with your manager. We’ll be in touch.”
“Thank you, Mr. Wang!”
“Goodbye.”
And with that, the line disconnected. The manager had left his computer unlocked so Seth thought he’d just run the old Google search for “Wang Chuanfu, BYD.”
<<The CEO and founder of BYD is Wang Chuanfu>>
Seth choked a little before composing himself, closed the browser and after taking a deep breath, pretended like it wasn’t a big deal that the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company just casually called him to star in a commercial for his new car.
“Nah… that couldn’t have been him. Must have been a coincidence,” Seth thought out loud. “Right?”
Approved!
