C.F. Catalunya were the winners of the S4 SSL Cup, but what ended up happening to them afterwards? How did their careers turn out after Catalunya's first taste of success? Here is the roster of the SSL S4 Catalunya squad and how their careers panned out.
Alexandra Gunnarsson:
Taken in the second round of the S2 draft by C.F. Catalunya, Alexandra Gunnarsson was Catalunya’s inaugural goalkeeper and went on to make 241 appearances across 13 seasons which still stands second in all-time appearances in club history after another player on this list would eventually passed them. She is still the keeper of the all-time clean-sheet record with 61, with Bartholomew Twinkletoes having 14 and current keeper Maarten Slothlenburg third all-time at 11. Given the changes in the league since, I don’t think that record is going to be surpassed. She also won 2 best xi keeper awards in S5 and S7 which showed she was not only a C.F. Catalunya great, but one of the best of her generation.
Vins Vins:
Vins Vins was not apart of the S2 draft but was claimed by C.F. Catalunya via wave wire. Vins Vins went on to make 222 appearances for C.F. Catalunya, becoming a mainstay of the team for years to come. Vins Vins only left C.F. Catalunya in his final season, to come play for their minor league team, Seoul Mythic F.C. Vins Vins is also the current holder of C.F. Catalunya’s all-time assist leader with 56, with the closest active player being Bernardo Fry at 3rd with 40 assists. Vins Vins was dangerous down the wing with his crossing ability and was awarded for his efforts with a best xi award in S6.
Jökull Júlíusson:
Another long-term centerpiece of this inaugural C.F. Catalunya team after been taken by them as the first overall pick in the S2 SSL draft. At 241 games, she remained in the team just as long as Alexandra Gunnarrson, but instead of retiring played another 3 additional seasons in Seoul. There, she formed its backbone in the backline for another 53 appearances with 42 coming in league competition. Jökull Júlíusson was a 5 time best xi player in S3,5,6,8, and 9. This not only shows Jökull Júlíusson’s prime as the best center back of her generation, but also arguably one of the all-time best centerbacks proving why she was taken first overall in the first place.
Leif Physt:
Picked up in the 3rd round with C.F. Catalunya’s 32nd pick in the SSL S4 draft, Leif Physt went on to have an immediate impact by helping Catalunya lift their first SSL Cup and first trophy in general. He would play for another 5 seasons making 86 appearances before being traded to Seoul in S9 for Jay Jay Ochoa. Leif Physt would mark his return in S14 for another 14 appearances, making him hit the 100 mark for Catalunya before finishing his final season in S15. He won a best xi in S13 with Seoul but was still an important player for Catalunya’s history.
Aleksandar Stojakovic:
Taken in the S2 Expansion Draft by C.F. Catalunya, Aleksandar Stojakovic was apart of the inaugural S2 squad and ended up playing 48 matches for Catalunya before leaving for A.C. Romana in S7 where he played for two seasons across 24 appearances before moving to Cairo City for S9-10 for a final 34 appearances, 135 all-time. Unfortunately, after this season, Aleksandar Stojakovic lost their starting spot to Leif Physt and ended up spending the next season on loan at Athenai, before spending his final season in Catalunya where he made more appearances for than any other club he played for. Maybe not as accomplished as some of the other names listed before him, yet still played a role in winning the SSL Cup and itching his name in their history books.
Juha Jarvinen
Taken in the 3rd round by C.F. Catalunya in S3, Juha Jarvinen came into the league as the fastest player and proved that speed kills when he took the S3 rookie of the year award. Juha went on to make 187 appearances for Catalunya and 38 for Seoul who he played for in S11-12. Juha Jarvinen also won the S12 best xi for Seoul and was named an alternate for best xi in S13 as well as winning the S13 golden boot. Juha Jarvinen is 6th overall in all-time appearances for the club and 4th in all-time assists.
Budget Busquets:
Founder of C.F. Catalunya, joining in S2 via the expansion draft, Budget Busquets went on to play in 235 games for C.F. Catalunya. Budget Busquets had to play in Seoul for S11-12 to help the team for cap purposes, but essentially spent S2-11,13-15 in Catalunya where he was the heart and soul of the team. Winning best xi four years in a row from S2-5 – ss well as, winning one as an alternate for Seoul in S12 – Budget Busquets was one of the greatest central midfielders of his generation and is considered a legend of Catalunya history alongside many of the names mentioned here.
Tim Sinclair:
Co-Found of C.F. Catalunya, Tim Sinclair was another part of Catalunya’s midfield. He played 48 matches with C.F. Catalunya before leaving after this cup run where he would join Adowa Accra for another 2 seasons and 27 appearances. His contributions to the foundation of the club set the standard and culture that helped bring about this first trophy in Catalunya history.
Awesome McPossum:
Picked up in S2 from Hollywood F.C., Awesome McPossum was a part of C.F. Catalunya’s inaugural season roster. He would end up playing from S2-7 racking up 83 appearances and winning another SSL Cup as well as an SSL Shield for this Catalunya side before retiring following the conclusion of S7. His hole was hard to fill, especially in S8 until Catalunya were able to bring in Wesley Stains in S9.
Kevin De Burnya:
A 4th round pick in the S4 draft class, Kevin De Burnya still managed 46 appearances for Catalunya before being shipped to Montréal United in S9 for 13 appearances, Red Star Laos in S10 for 15 appearances, Athênai F.C. in S11 for a single appearance, and AS Paris in S12 for a final 17 appearances. Certainly a player that ended up bouncing around the league after leaving Catalunya but nevertheless was influential in his 5 seasons spent there.
Shion Okamoto:
Another S2 expansion draft pick, taken from Tokyo S.C., and inaugural C.F. Catalunya player, Shion Okamoto played 116 matches from S2-7, and S9-10 where he played for Seoul in S8, where he won a best xi award as a central midfielder. Shion Okamoto is still ranked 8th all-time in goals for Catalunya.
Jackson Clarke:
Jackson Clarke was taken in the S2 draft by C.F. Catalunya where he played 52 times for them scoring 18 goals and 10 assists. He left for F.C. Kaapstad in S9-11 for another 28 appearances with 3 goals and 5 assists before retiring.
Floppy McFlopface:
Floppy McFlopface was drafted late in the S4 draft with the 35th overall pick, but ended up playing 94 times producing 22 goals and 27 assists from S4-10, and S12 for Catalunya. He went on loan to Cairo City for two seasons where he played 20 games and scored 5 goals and 5 assists. He’s still 9th in all-time assists.
Mojo Rizing:
Taken in the S3 waiver wire process. Mojo Rizing went on to play 160 appearances from S3-12 where he scored 52 goals and 28 assists with a single appearance for Seoul in S13 where he provided an assist in 75 minutes of play. He managed 3 goals and an assist in the S4 cup run. Mojo Rizing was arguably the SSL’s first active supersub. They managed to become third all-time in goals scored and 8th in all-time appearances.
Dogwood Maple:
Finally, Dogwood Maple was taken 8th overall in the S4 draft by Catalunya. Here, he 251 appearances with 151 goals and 53 assists marking him as the all-time leader in appearances, goals, and only second in assist. He came in and immediately fired 8 goals in the cup, 18 across all competitions to put himself on the maple as one of the leagues best. It’s unfortunate he only managed one best xi in S14 considering how he became a goal scoring legend for Catalunya (18th all-time league wide).
Alexandra Gunnarsson:
Taken in the second round of the S2 draft by C.F.
