Reaction and Overreaction to the Preseason
#1
If there’s one thing preseason sporting events are good for, it is largely unsubstantiated overreaction based on piecemeal results that may not even feature teams participating at full strength! Let’s do it!

Is Adowa Accra … good? Like really good?: Last season’s Division 2 champions, and it appears they may be up to the task of top-tier football. They defeated Hollywood FC 4-2 prior to Hollywood earning the SSL Shield, and added another preseason win against Seoul. The implosion of Sydney City leaves everything up for grabs at the top of the pecking order, and Adowa Accra has made it clear they will be looking to capitalize.

Will Sydney go from first to worst?: Sydney City’s issues have been well documented, so we won’t microwave the leftovers here. Still, it’s a shock to the system to see the club that picked up the double a season ago may indeed be relegation candidates in Season 6. With two losses and a -5 goal differential in their two preseason matches, there wasn’t much to smile about for the team from down under.

Crossing the streams: The second preseason match day saw two matches pairing a Division 1 foe against a Division 2 club. There was the Adowa Accra-Seoul match, with Seoul recently relegated to Division 2 and falling 1-0 to Adowa Accra. The other promotion-relegation duel saw a 2-2 draw between relegated AS Paris and promoted Uniao Sao Paulo.

Do we even really know?: Even as the preseason was playing out, rosters were still changing daily. The brief timespan between preseason match days one and two saw five trades, about the same number of waiver claims, and numerous other signings, loans and cuts. Add in the possibility that some clubs entered the preseason with a purely experimental approach, and it’s likely we know no more about some teams than we did before the preseason.
