S8 Theme Week 21/2 -- 28/2
#21
My Dream Team, is truly a dream. As a manager for another league, in another sport, in another age, I had the dream of what was the only African team. The fit is even better here, and is one I may someday pursue here.

Allow me to pretend to introduce…. The Nairobi Widowmakers! Now, as far as the actual naming, they’d be known as Nairobi S.C., with the nickname of Widowmakers. The reason hopefully being obvious that naming conventions are different in football than they are in basketball. The kits would be primarily black and red, with relatively simple styling. No names on the kits, as players should be playing for the badge on the front, not the name on the back. Speaking of the badge, the primary logo would be of a Cape buffalo, in rust orange, standing with one hoof on a football.

The most difficult part would be looking into Kenyan, and east African in general, footballing tradition. It would be my goal to try to be true to how the sporting culture is there. Good news is I enjoy a bit of research, and I’m sure the information is out there somewhere.

As to the motto, well…. I’m quite awful at them…. But something that emphasizes effort, sacrifice for the team, and never quitting on the fans.

And there you have a rather quick run down of what I’d do if I took over at some point with a new team. Enjoy!

It's an interesting task to create an interesting expansion team for SSL (sorry for tautology)

The main and the most important part is location. Asian teams are not a new thing for the league, but Asia is big and diverse. So, for the team's location, I would choose Mumbai, India. Mumbai is the financial capital of India and is home to a diverse and passionate sports fan base. Cricket is currently the most popular sport in the city, but football is gaining in popularity, and there is a strong appetite for a top-level soccer team.

The team could be called Mumbai Mavericks, and their logo could feature a bold "M" with a soccer ball at its center (yeah, I know it's bad, hopefully someone will come with better idea). The team's colors could be green and yellow, reflecting the colors of the Indian flag. The team can go a long way of popularizing football in the most populated country in the world with working closely with the local community off the field. And on the field it will prefer the fast paced and high pressing style, closely resembling the city.

Overall, I hope that Mumbai Mavericks could become a powerhouse team in the SSL, representing one of the world's most exciting cities and countries.

I would have to say that my dream team would bring more professional futbol down to South America. Though there are plenty of other teams in the area, I beleive we could build a big following for a team in the mining town of Potosi, Bolivia. European and North American teams might complain about the conditions, as it sits over 13,000 feet above sea level, but I do not care about that. Call it a built-in advantage, if you will, but both teams have to play in the conditions.

Colors
For the color scheme, I would most likely go with silver, to represent the mining community, and black because I like the combination.

Motto
Count us out at your own peril! This represents the fact that the city itself has come on some hard times lately, as it has lost population, investments, and industry over the years. But the folks who remain are a hearty bunch, and don't want to hear about what outsiders think about their chances at future success. In fact, they prefer if you discount their chances, as it makes the eventual victory that much sweeter for our squad.

Whereas other teams or regions have experienced long periods of success, where a championship might come as an expectation, I can tell you that the first SSL championship won by Minero de Potosi would be thoroughly appreciated and celebrated.

If I were to make a team for the SSL it would be a European team. I would make it a Nordic team. For those that don’t know where the nordic region is, it's in the northern region of Europe. It includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Åland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The team would be called FK Norden. Or FC Nordic for the English speaking people. The team would tour all the involved countries during the home matches. So that all nations get an as equal amount of home matches as possible.

The logo and colours of FK Norden would be inspired by the Nordic Council and would therefore rock a swan as a logo and the colours would be light blue and white with a banner with the main colours from the nations flags diagonally across the shirt. The Nordic swan symbolises trust, integrity and freedom.

The local anthem of the nation hosting the match will be used as pregame music. Where everybody at the stadium would sing along and at the end the ending of Sweden’s national anthem will be added. For those that don't know those words they are “Ja, jag vill leva, jag vill dö i Norden” or in english “Yes, I want to live, I want to die in the North”. The Icelandic way of supporting their national football team will also be added. And it will not be a pitiful version like the French did.

I'm bringing a team to Norway. I don't know exactly what city yet but i want it too represent the whole country. The uniforms would probably primarily be white like snow with small grey accents. With the other uniform being an all black one with the same grey accents. Some pretty basic uniforms but i think a lot of team overcomplicate things. I just wanna build a simple but sleek design. We will play in some HUGE stadium. Probably want it too seat over 100,000 people in it. I want the entire stands to be all white so you cant tell where fans end and snow begin. I think that would look so cool like the good ol polar bear in a snowstorm but instead its 100,000 fans in a blizzard screaming about soccer. Then with this loud crowd i want to play like fast soccer. I mean like fast no wasting time just go at all times pure aggression. Have the crowd paying attention and screaming the entire time. Just create and environment opponents wont be used too and punish them. I think if we could create a winning culture at home that would then lead to huge success else where.

I'm going to also throw my hat in for another South American team. While Uruguay is a great choice for the history, I started by looking at the map. SSL currently has no presence on the west cost of South America nor in Central America. To fill that gap, I propose Club Deportivo Machu Picchu.

Playing out of Cusco, Peru (population 500,000), the team is of course affectionately nicknamed the Stubborn Llamas and draws its fans from up and down the Andes. Fans proudly wear the pink and blue kits inspired by traditional fabrics from the region, and the team crest would build from the city's amazing coat of arms (seen below).

Home games in Cusco offer the team one almost insurmountable advantage: though technically sitting in a valley of the Andes, the city is still at an elevation of over 11,000 feet (3,400 meters)! For comparison, Mexico's famous Estadio Azteca is at only 7,200 feet (2,200). Training and playing in this atmosphere would give CDMP players an impressive physical advantage.

(And if the league can open up two slots to ensure a natural rival, I would counter the mountain height with Panama City, whose elevation is technically 0. Fans here would cheer for the Canal Asociación Nacional de Atletismo y Cultura, typically called Canal ANAC.)

Prospective SSL owners are searching high and low for the next city or country to bring an SSL team but this writer suggests something the world hasn't seen yet.

Welcome the ANTARCTIC PENGUINS

Not only would this team be the first franchise sport on the continent, it would be the first time in centuries that a new team has been brought to a new continent.

With a beautiful glossy black stadium against a stark white background, this team's image would be seared into the memories of sports fans around the world, becoming the jewel of the SSL.

How many players wish to achieve a bucket list of seeing the world? How many players will see their dreams realized when they play in Antarctica? Scientists are people too, you know, and they'll love finally having a local team to cheer for.

This stadium could be built with state of the art technology to keep it warm year round and also offer unique sunlights to give players and fans the feeling and warmth of natural light even when the continent faces months of complete darkness.

To pass up an opportunity like this is to pass up eternal glory. No franchise could be as unique as the Antarctic Penguins and let's hope ownership chooses expansion there.

The Princess would have to create a team to represent her home in China, Fangchenggang. Known for their large port and the carriers that come and go daily through the local waters, the team would have to be named the Dockworkers to represent the maritime pride of the area. Of course, a blue and white color scheme would have to match. Ideally, a fish would be featured somewhere on the jersey, perhaps as part of a side stripe design. China can be a competitive place to make a living, and working on a dock can be one of the more exhausting jobs one can pick to work in China. Every man and woman working there needs a strong spirit to help manage cargo regardless of what the weather may be.

That's the kind of mentality a football team representing the port of Fangchenggang would need to bring to the pitch as well. Whether sun, rain, or snow, it's imperative that the players put forth a strong effort to represent not only themselves but also the Nation of China that the prefecture represents. The goal would be to develop the team into an ideal of Chinese football and make it an appealing location for young Chinese footballers to both develop their skills and showcase the talents of China to the larger world on their stage. The Fangchenggang Dockworkers would be a force to be reckoned with in football.

It's time to share some light to the Baltics region. And since the only notable player from that region comes from Latvia I'll put the team there. But instead of choosing the obvious choice of Riga, the real choice will go to the town named Tukums. Seems odd, but that's somewhat a shoutout to Elmis The Heretic who comes from that place.

And yes, 16k town isn't exactly the ideal place to make a team and the local team isn't the big dog, though still playing in the top domestic league. But hey, building a stadium isn't going to be a big deal if their hometown devil hero would share some money for that. Right???...Also I think teams in smaller towns do have some charm in it. Plus, this might be the only D2 team Elmis would be ok to play for.

The logo and stuff? Since their domestic one is the green/white/black one with three spruce in it. And I do like green color. I think we just can take that team and move to SSL and keep the logo altogether. Maybe some modifications around too. Keeping it simple with jerseys as well: green/white and stuff. Though if there will be skilled enough jersey makers who could put these three spruces into so it looks pretty, why not then.

My dream SSL team is located in Quebec City. I already hear you screaming that there's already a team in Quebec, but here me out. There's always been this historical rivalry between the two cities. This could become SSL's version of El Classico. Both teams are really close geographically, but the population can sustain two clubs, that's for sure. This is also a personal choice for me because Quebec City is my hometown, my hood, so it would be nice to see represented in a sim league. There's already a SMJHL franchise there, but that's not enough. I'm tired of seeing Montreal as superior to Quebec City and that would put them on equal footing in the league. Montreal already has the fleur de lysée on their logo, but I'd have it anyways, it's synonymous with the province, so that's a must. There are some things that make Quebec standout and one of these things is the Quebec Winter Carnival and its mascot, Bonhomme Carnaval and his iconic belt with a pattern that would fit very well on the chest area of the kit. Their arena would be called the Igloo. That's funny because of Quebec City can get really cold and the big arena there looks like an igloo from afar and I figured the stadium would be built in a similar style. That's pretty much it for my dream SSL franchise that would probably never happen, but one can dream!
