THEME WEEK

The Theme Week is a chance to earn 6 uncapped TPE by writing an article, doing a graphic or recording a podcast about an announced theme related to the league.

Theme Week will run from today June 27th to Wednesday July 5th at 11:59PM Pacific.

The Theme

This Theme Week will cover international teams. If the SSL were to incorporate an international tournament similar to the World Cup, the amount of players and the diversity of birthplaces would mean that the teams would at times cover regions more than just one single nation. One example of how this could look like using the current player numbers and birthplaces is this:



16 national or regional teams that span the globe with a placeholder name in the legend of the picture.

The theme for this week is for you to choose one nation/region from the map above and to create whatever branding you want for them. For instance the names of the larger regions are very "matter-of-fact" for which you might have a better or more appropriate name, you might have an idea for a logo or kit for the team. (Kitbasher is great for kits), or just write about what it would be like for your player to play for their region.

You are able to do any of the following variants of the tasks:
Written: Write 200 words about the theme.

Graphic: Create a graphic about the theme.

Podcast: Talk for at least 10 minutes about the theme.

This event will be a true World Cup, more so even than the real one, as it spans the whole globe. The real World Cup has the possibility of spanning the world, but realistically there are pockets of the world it'll likely never touch. Probably the largest of these pockets would be the non-Australia, non-New Zealand parts of Oceania - there have been a few times the Solomon Islands have been within a game of qualifying, but that game would usually be against New Zealand and not be close. My player happens to represent a different pocket of the world that is represented more strongly in the SSL World Cup than the actual World Cup - the Arctic Circle. Spread across several teams, the extreme north nonetheless gets a bit bigger of a shot here. Whether it's Nunavut in Canada, Greenland (competing as usual with their controlling nation, Denmark), the Sami regions of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and a bit of Russia, or my own player's home: Longyearbyen, on the island of Svalbard. The world's northernmost municipality with a population of over 1000 people, in a tournament of each country for itself we'd not only be drowned out by Norway proper, they wouldn't even make it. In the SSL World Cup, there are only 16 teams - so if a player from Longyearbyen is good enough to make the Scandinavia team, that player has made the actual tournament. No qualifying rounds are needed. The Scandinavia team is comprised of Norway (and its constituent territories, including Svalbard, and therefore Longyearbyen), Sweden, and Denmark (and its constituent territories, including Greenland). Iceland, on the other hand, is with Scotland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland... might as well call that team "The Coalition of Not England" given Iceland's recent successes against them, as well as the historical context for the others.

One thing that I've been thinking about after hearing of the SSL World Cup and its shared national teams is the question of what if they decided to do something similar in real life? Create or allow combined national teams for areas such as Oceania or the islands of the Caribbeans? Something that would potentially allow these smaller nations to have a chance to actually compete and be competitive on the biggest stage? The concept isn't entirely unheard of in the wider world of sport.

The most notable example likely being the West Indies cricket side, composed of 15 different Caribbean states and countries. While I don’t follow Rugby Union myself, I also know that they have had a Barbarians team, composed of players from multiple different countries that have played against other top national teams. In both cases these representative sides have been able to see success, the West Indies having won the One Day International and T20 World Cups twice each. It has given players from these nations a chance to compete and win at the highest stage, something that they never would have had the chance to do if they were only representing country.

Could such a thing be possible in the wider world of football? A potential shortfall of course would be a country missing out, having no players good enough to represent these combined sides. But then again, the individual national teams wouldn’t necessarily have to be dissolved entirely for these combined teams to form. It is an interesting concept and while I don’t think it’d ever happen due to the many complications it would form, I think seeing such a thing would really be a sight to behold.
