Helena Söderberg Retires
#1
When I joined this league back in S1, it was just a little baby league. I knew nothing about soccer whatsoever outside of paying attention to the World Cup every now and then and an ill-fated attempt to get up early enough in the morning to watch some premiere league shenanigans a few years back. Well, I still know nothing about soccer, so I can’t say I’ve picked up much on that front. But gosh, it’s been two and a half years on this player, and it feels weird to retire without saying anything about it.

I’m not going anywhere - I’m excited about some stuff that’s being worked on, ideas people are coming up with, all of that. But this first career has been a journey. I’ve been on the BOD since week 38, which in real life time is since August of 2022, and it’s been a completely different (and humbling) experience to leadership roles I have held in other leagues. Unlike the SHL, I’ve known nothing about the sim engine or the sport here - for me, this has been entirely about utilizing other skills. We have navigated a whole lot of things in the time that I’ve been here - shifting the setup of the league to work with the pieces we’ve got, trying to recruit on a timeline that helps the league grow but is also manageable with the number of managers we have, even a fun spicy attempt at league sabotage or two. I’ve jumped into simming, which, while it has yet to teach me a lot about soccer either real or fake strategy-wise, has helped me learn a lot of abbreviations and has at the very least taught me how to push the right buttons. More recently, I’ve also dug out my very rusty video editing skills and started producing most of the streams. I don’t intend to stop any of that, but it is fun to look back and see how my role here has shifted and expanded over the past two years. This league has also taught me the importance of choosing your friends wisely, and being willing to call your friends out if they do things that threaten the projects and places you care about - and how the real friends will stick with you even when you do that.

I want to also shout out everybody who’s also been here pretty much from the start. The OG Tokyo crew, who went through the strangest managerial turmoil pretty much right out of the gate and seem to have decided that SSL Cups are our Thing. Everybody who’s been so kind and helpful to me as I floundered around not knowing what I was doing - whether it’s @Nhamlet helping me with my build in Tokyo, other managers being flexible and communicative when it comes to simming and such, everybody who’s put in the work on the BOD even if you’re not there anymore. Most of all, though, I want to shout out @Canadice. I don’t know how he’s not burned out yet with the amount of work he puts into this league, but my biggest regret is that I don’t know enough about certain things (soccer wise, sim wise, technology wise) to help out more than I do. Canadice is one of the smartest, hardest-working people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, and I hope everyone on this site realizes how lucky we are to have him, because this league would not exist without him.

Okay I guess that’s everything. Helena Söderberg retires. She is going to go and raise children with her former-arch-nemesis now-wife Eirlys Snooks @Aleris . Hopefully she can miss a couple more penalties just for old times’ sake this year as a corpse.

On to the next one!
