Sydney City vs Stockholm IK, or, Red Cards suck
#1
A red card. Almost always one of the worst things that can happen to any team. But when about when that red card happens only twenty minutes into a game? And what about when the one to get it is one of the team’s main defenders? That’s a recipe for suffering.

That’s also exactly what happened in the latest Sydney City game, against Stockholm IC. The team, which had been off to a flying start this season, felt confident going into the game, but when defender Capy Bara picked up a second yellow card a mere twenty minutes into the game, everything was turned on its head.

From that point on, it was the Stockholm show, the Swedish team dominating the flow of the game. They attacked relentlessly, Sydney’s formation disrupted and leaving them unable to fully interrupt the passing game of the Europeans. The additional effect of struggling to build out of the back after every failed Stockholm attack left the Sydneysiders sitting in the defensive.

However, some credit should be given to Sydney for refusing to give up. Despite losing, and being significantly outplayed, they did manage to equalize after Stockholm’s first goal, and had several chances to do so again late in the game after Stockholm’s second. That, on top of an inspiring performance by their goalie, Benecio Aquilera III, meant that Sydney can take at least some pride in their spirit.
