Day in the Life - Ashito Aoi (Football Training Edition)
#1
[NOTE: This is an exclusive given to us, the Japan News Network. An over enthusiastic Ashito Aoi fan followed him throughout his training session to see what a typical day looked like for Ashito at P.S. Jakarta. We here at the Japan News Network would like to thank that anonymous fan for their hard work and P.S. Jakarta for allowing this absurd request to actually happen. This is recorded in the perspective of the said anonymous fan.]

09.30 AM: Ashito arrives at Training Ground. He then gets his kit from the Laundry Room, which includes underwear, socks, shorts, t-shirt, sweat top. I was told that if the weather is cold, a rain jacket and long pants would be added to the above list. And if it's really cold, woolly hat. Then he grabbed his cleaned boots from the resident kit man.

09.45AM: Ashito went Into his assigned changing room to put his kit on. Then he went off Into the Players' lounge area at the training ground for a cup of kombucha. After that it was the Player Lounge usual - hanging out and shoot the breeze with the rest of the players who had arrived, exchanging the sticker collection with Tonto Tut, reading the newspapers, watching TV and talking to the players and training ground staff about what the newspapers and media have been saying about any of the players, team or coaching staff.

10.00AM: Ashito went into the treatment room to have a chat with the doctor and the physiotherapist and had a brief pre-training massage session with him. I was told that Ashito preferred having this session every day so that any little injuries he had would be wrapped up and dealt with before the training session.

10.20AM: It was the time for the Signing duty - nothing but signing the never-ending stream of footballs, shirts, jerseys, magazines, pictures and books etc. that were left at the training ground for the Jakarta fans. It was even more time consuming for Ashito because of his Ehime lot.

10.30AM: "Lets go" - was what one of the coaches said when he called the players out to the training field. And lo went Ashito with his team mates. The atmosphere was very light-hearted and relaxed, with lots of joking around and chatting amongst the players.  It was a solid 40 - 45 minutes of warming up. Jogging, stretching, fun games and there was a gradual increase of intensity of the exercises in preparation for the training session. There was loads of chatting and laughter in this session with the coaches themselves joining in a couple of times.

11.15AM: Now that Ashito and the others were properly warmed up, it was the time for intense running, sprinting, jumping and action on the football field. There were small games in teams, keeping the ball & lots and lots of passing exercises. Everyone including Ashito started to sweat a bit. The atmosphere slowly transformed and by now there definitely was no more joking around as the training session started becoming serious.

11.30AM: The Jakarta manager arrived on the training field right about this time. Then the players got split into two teams and the real training started. It mainly consisted of shooting practice, shadow play, team games and tactics discussion. Since Jakarta were changing tactics willy-nilly in order to produce a result, this session went on for the next 1 hour.

12.30PM:  The Jakarta manager went back and this signaled the end of the training. Ashito and all the players re-grouped with the Fitness Coach for a 15 minute warm down. Pretty similar to the warm up, this session was more relaxed and the players all started joking and were having a laugh again. From what I saw, there were lots of stretches and jogging in this session & finally some back strengthening exercises to finish off the warm down.

12.45PM: Ashito went back into the Lounge area with everyone for lunch. Luckily thanks to the affluence of the SSL league, the players were able to order their native cuisines and Ashito did eat his Japanese bento style lunch.

01:00PM: Ashito changed from his kit to a gym attire. He then went to the press area to meet some reporters that he was informed about during his lunch. Several reporters, including "THE GUY" from the Japan News Network were waiting in the press room and a mass of interviews were conducted by the press. The entirety of the media included local press, national press of Indonesia and Japan and there were even TV cameras present.

01.45PM: After an exhausting 45 minutes, Ashito was out and I was able to him. Finally! It was then he told me that sometimes he stayed back for another 30 minutes to lift weights, as he was trying to improve his physique. He also said that he only did this 2 to 3 times a week, depending on the frequency of games. He was so generous that he gave me his personal routine in writing (with a signature on request). It included sessions on general legs (quads, calves and hamstring exercises), some upper body for his back, arms (biceps and triceps) and shoulders . He said that it’s important to keep good balance in the workout and to make sure that all muscle groups get worked out equally. He did 3 sets of 10 repetitions for each muscle group, and this was the sort of dedication that made me become a big fan of his.

02:15PM: After finishing his gym work, he politely thanked me for my support (ultimate fan moment, yay!), took a picture with me and left for his home.

P.S. : No, I will not be sharing the photo online. It will be a family treasure at least for the next 3 generations.

[NOTE: The P.S. was written by the said anonymous fan and he specifically requested us to add that in our article. And we here at Japan News Network do proper journalism and keep up our word.]
