GRADED: Reykjavik Rookies Leading Offensive Charge
#1
Reykjavik United currently sits in third place in the Major League table after 8 games played. Their 4-2-2 record is good for 14 points, leaving them two behind long-running rival Schwarzwalder FV and a more menacing eight points behind the league’s current top club, Uniao Sao Paulo, who is off to a blistering 7-0-1 record. Surely their pace will cool a bit, but Reykjavik needs to begin accumulating wins and avoiding future draws regardless to make up the necessary ground if it wants a shot at winning the league.

Mike Rashford II has been a remarkably bright spot in his first campaign with the majors club, netting 9 goals already and adding 5 assists to boot. He already has 3 player of the match honors and has been the major offensive lift. Reykjavik’s 21 goals scored is tied for second most in the SSL and Rashford II has either scored or assisted on two-thirds of those!

George Shaheen is also in his first Major League season for Reykjavik, earning the early call-up after the club lost more veteran talent to the expansion draft during the offseason. Shaheen has netted 4 goals and assisted on 3 others, representing involvement in one-third of the club’s offensive output. Not Rashford II numbers, but more than respectable for the S18 player.

It is impressive to see this pair of rookies, who were electric together for North Shore United a season ago, be able to keep the chemistry AND production going as they’ve stepped up to much more intense competition at this, the game’s highest level. They’ll need to continue to build on that and find creative ways to create and complete scoring chances to try and help Reykjavik not just keep pace in the table’s top third, but to make up ground against Sao Paulo and Schwarzwalder.

The season is long still, and there is a ton of football left to be played.
