Nyron sat in the dressing room feeling tired. A long Academy season was taking its toll, but he couldn't let it show during the team talk.
"... season is not over. We can still win this league, so that starts today. I wan wing backs pushing up - go out there and attack."
Nyron sneaked a glance at his phone. Still nothing. He was starting to get nervous about his SSL prospects - at this point in the season he was sure he should have talked to one of the professional teams, but still nothing.
"Now get out on that pitch and win!"
The team talk worked - it was immediately obvious that Atletico Medellin couldn't cope with the pressure Port Royal were applying. It took 3 minutes for Jalon Smokes to roll the ball back to Nyron. He squared it to Alejandro Fuecoco, who rolled it to a visiting SSL legend to score the first.
Four minutes later, he latched onto a loose ball on the right wing, squared it to Jose Dias who found Fuecoco in the centre of the box to sweep in the second.
Nyron set the move off for the third too, finding a legend on the wing, slotting Fuecoco into the channel who crossed for Smokes to stab home. 17 minutes played, 3 goals.
At half time, the Port Royal players were expecting a pat on the back - they didn't get one.
"I told you to attack, and you've done fuck all for the last half hour. The game is 90 minutes long - play like you want to be in the SSL."
Port Royal went out and pressed. It took until the 62nd minute for a breakthrough. The ball came to Nyron after a corner he took, and he slid a pass to Jose Dias for a thumping finish to make it 4.
Nyron made a dummy run for the fifth, dragging the full back to create space for Dias to put the cross in. He watched as Smokes tapped in the sixth and Fuecoco curled the seventh in. With less than a minute left, he ran onto a ball in the right channel, made it to the goal line and drilled a cross in for Fuecoco to score the eighth.
"8-1 is exactly the sort of result we needed, lads," his manager said after the game, "you did exactly what I asked."
Nyron checked his phone again - 4 messages.
"Hi, I'm from Sao Paulo..."
"Hi Nyron, I'm a scout from Hollywood FC..."
"I'm the new OM of an expansion team, and..."
"Well done honey, you played so well today..."
