Academy Task 5: Buenos Dias Buenos Aires!
#1
Well, here we are, it’s deep dive time. As someone brand new to the league, I figured I’d learn a little bit about the history of one of the teams in the league. I was going to pick a team at random, and I sort of did (mainly because I don’t have all of the teams memorized yet), but when I looked at the standings page, it became pretty clear I had to write about the team in Buenos Aires, since my player, Alejandro Fuecoco, hails from Argentina.

The first thing I did was check out how well the team has done in its history. The results are less than encouraging. While they’ve played the 4th most games in league history with 239 games played. They joined the league in the 3rd season, and the career record sits at 93 wins, 42 draws, and 104 losses. Not exactly anything to write home about, but not the worst ever either. When the league split into two divisions, they were in D2. They weren’t there for too long, getting promoted to D1 in Season 7. Season 10 they finished at the top of the table, taking home the organizations first and only championship, coming out the victors of a 3 way tie thanks to their goal differential. Other than that magical season however, the team just kind of hangs around in the middle of the major league standings, usually in the 3-6 range.

They also ended up winning the SSL Cup twice, once in S9 and another in S16. It seems they’re a better cup team than a league team. Interesting.

As for cool players in history, Buenos Aires has a few. Franco Torres comes to mind here, winning the MVP in S9. Torres is the league’s 2nd all time leader in goals with 234 and he was also the league’s first ever MVP and he won it again a few seasons later. Neither of those awards were with Buenos Aires however. Can’t go wrong with a dude like that. Buenos Aires would hit their second MVP in back to back seasons with Edwin van der Sloth taking the award home. Van der Sloth sits 12th all time in goals with 142, and 6th all time in assists with 99.

They’ve only had one Golden Boot winner, Torres in S9, never won the cool sounding James Bond inspired Golden Eye, and they’ve never won a Golden Glove award either. At least you can say that the team had some outstanding leadership, winning 3 straight manager of the year awards from S8 - S10.

Overall, Buenos Aires doesn’t really jump off the page at you in any way, shape or form in terms of “being impressive to a new player”. That’s not meant to be a knock on them, but other than the “golden age” of S8-S10, there isn’t much of anything that’s too notable to speak of. They’re just kind of…there. Not too bad to be terrible, not too good to be considered with the best franchises (clubs?) in the league. While I don’t fully know what the team’s plans are, or were, going over the history of this squad really had me feeling like I did from like 2001-2018 being a Bills fan of the NFL. Hopefully the club gives its long time fans something to really cheer for again really soon! But probably not this season, as they once again find themselves in the middle of the table so far this year. (581)

Not a bad little deep dive, clear narrative structure and offers a fair amount of detail
