Three Points Shy

Three points shy.

That was the end result for Reykjavik’s pursuit of a Majors championship in S21.

So close one could almost reach out and touch it. And yet by the end of the season it never really felt within the club’s grasp to actually catch eventual champion Hollywood FC.

It was a tremendous season by most measures. Reyjkavik finished with 13 wins, three losses, and two draws for a total of 41 table points. They scored a league-high 62 goals, more than double the 30 total goals they allowed to their competitors.

It simply was not enough. Hollywood FC scored at an essentially equal pace, netting 61 total goals on the year, but proved much stingier on the defensive side of the ball, allowing a league-fewest 20 goals in 18 matches played.

One could arguably point to Matchday 2 as making all the difference. On that fateful June 28 day, Hollywood FC won the first head-to-head contest between these two clubs 2-1. Reykjavik got another chance to defeat Hollywood on Matchday 10, but could only manage a 2-2 draw.

Three points shy. Three points lost in head-to-head contests.

To be the best, it is often said that one must beat the best. Unfortunately for Reykjavik during S21, the club simply could not manage to beat Hollywood FC. Of course there were other stumbles over the course of the 18-game season, but it is those two head-to-head matches that most clearly showed the difference between the Majors’ best team, crowned champion, and the Majors’ second best team.

Which in the end finished just three points shy.
