Roles and Traits
#1
As I try to figure out FM24 more and more, it’s the Player Roles and Player Traits that have been filling most of my brain space. I don’t watch soccer, and so I don’t have a very strong mental model of how players are “supposed” to play. I know I want to be in the midfield, and I know I want to run around like a maniac. I know that I want to be an absolute dog on the field, hounding whoever I can find, and winning balls back. I know that a player of that style would be a defensive midfielder by position, but Player Roles seem to have a strong effect on just how that manifests.

One would assume from my description that I would target the Ball Winning Midfielder Role, and they’re probably right, and I can’t believe I missed it on my first 27 reads through the list. Now the real question is what Traits will best enable that kind of play, regardless of the Role I’m technically given?

I’m already Playing Short Simple Passes, which makes sense, to distribute to more creative players. I’m also Moving Into Channels, to help with give and go plays, and always being available for the easy pass. I would imagine that I would be able to get away with Dives Into Tackles once my attributes are high enough, but the fouling early in my career could be a setback. I’ll have to accept that I can’t play everywhere all at once, so doing something like Runs With Ball Rarely, or Refrains From Taking Long Shots could reinforce the guardrails of my style.

There are a lot of traits to choose from, think wisely!
