An Article On Graphics
#1
I lost my TPE lead in this Draft Class, which I know is just timing of Bounties getting paid out, but it makes me want to write more Bounties in some effort to “catch up”. What I’m wondering about today is the SSL opinion on Graphics, and whether they are the “cheat code” that they’re often considered to be in other leagues. Generally, Graphics are seen as this easy thing that you can pump out a bunch of, and even if they’re not 5/5, they get steady pay, you can do a couple per week, and you can get by with them. Sometimes there’s caps on templated ones, like card styles or whatever, but generally you can get away with having a “style” so long as you’re pretty good at graphics, and have mastered the art of finding renders and assets.

But here in the SSL, Articles are given basically the same weight as Graphics. I mean the barrier of entry here is pretty low, and really, you can pump out some moderately formed thoughts en masse, and make your living that way. I’m sure someone a little deeper rooted than me could even make their fortune on similarly “templated” Articles, recapping the news around the league, on even a daily schedule. Between Gameday scores, Discord chatter, and Media highlights, you could certainly crush a couple hundred words daily, without even worrying about hitting weekly caps or anything.

So would you consider Graphics as powerful here as in other leagues? Or have Articles finally crossed over into the “meta”?

My opinion doesn’t count for shit but I don’t think someone who puts in at least a non-meme level of effort every week is necessarily benefitting from a “cheat code” so to speak. If a user did 2 graphics a week for an entire season, that’s about the same level of time commitment some league jobs require. Not all league jobs, mind you. Im not that ignorant! But if you just have a couple hours of job work a week, you are probably comparable as far as amount of time spent.

The next thing to consider would be are the graphics helping the community become more engaged? I always look at graphics as what really makes a sim league stand out as unique. Ive only barely been able to get passable at graphics, and its taken a lot of time and effort. Not everyone has either of those resources. We are already doing a not insignificant amount of time to just be active in our silly sim sport hobby.

Articles may be considered more “meta” because the barrier of entry is lower, and I think if that makes earning more accessible to more users its fine. That’s engagement and that’s a good thing. However I think the things that really give the league pop and staying power skew towards graphics. Personally, I feel a lot cooler seeing graphics of my player than an article about their stats.

tbf maybe I go a bit crazy in articles, really loving stat articles, but in other leagues I often felt like making stat articles is almost useless, as you spend sometimes a couple hours gathering stats (and if not in my case I often spend that time setting up stuff, like the ELO rankings in this league), to write an article and get barely anything, tbf maybe this is still true for the SSL compared to quicker articles, however I like football/soccer more than the other sports, and thus like to spend the time on it (although I do use them for the affiliate TPE in other leagues) :)

But yeah I can agree with the graphics taking more times than spamming out some quicker articles I think (although I would be very bad at graphics).
