I Don't Know What I Don't Know
#1
I’m honestly really torn between what role I want to end up playing in. I keeping coming back around to some of the same online resources over and over again, as I both try to learn FM24 for my own save, but also for Kaspars Kalinins. And as it turns out, the center midfield is very deceiving, and seems to be the place that most people make their tactical errors. Half of the role names are obviously very non-English, and the rest seem to be either a flat out lie, or just not what I imagine in my head when I read those words.

Thankfully, there are some great resources on the internet that are saving me, so I get the idea a bit, but I still don’t know what’s most important to me. I definitely want to be on the Defensive end of Defensive Midfielder. I want to hound the ball, win it back, allow my Central Defenders more of an opportunity to be dynamic and take risks, and for me to be able to distribute the ball to the runners and the playmakers. Which to me, in my brain says that I should pick Ball-Winning Midfielder. Except, BWM spends so much of their time hounding the ball, that they aren’t actually helpful in holding the formation. They’re the monkey in the middle. So if my team’s CD aren’t particularly dynamic, I could probably swing that, since they won’t be taking tactical risks anyways. But, on the other side, roles like Anchor or Half-Back would push me too far back, and there would be a huge gap between the attacking line and the defensive line, that is, unless my midfield partner is an effective runner and playmaker, or we have really creative wingers. I could instead work on something like Deep Lying Playmaker, but that essentially ignores the defensive vigor.

I suppose the answer is that I just need to be patient and work with my organization to figure out what exists, what tactical system they like, and how I can fit into that. Every decision that I would be making now means making an assumption that may not be true. And while almost everything at this point is reversible with a few articles, I like knowing what I’m doing, and why it’s the best option. So I’m a little twitchy, but very excited.

If I knew soccer more and had time to get into things, I'd be down to download FM24 an see about the tactics side of things. I know there's different fromations, each with their own strengths and weaknesses and some depend on the make-up of your team and what would highlight their strengths. To use a real life example, I know some managers have thrived off of a possession based system, while others can be a lot more fast with how they attack. I do think the Portal, at least in regards to building your player and the guide the league has for each role is a life-saver. I know it helped me a lot in regards to an initial build in the minors before I made the jump to Right Wing back in Magyar (And who knows if I change position again?). Like I knew initially I wanted to be a playmaker, so it highlighted the stats.

To use my own experience from FHM for the SHL, it was initially intimidating and that is in a sport I somewhat know. The game has different roles for each player and the main tactics. It takes quite a bit of time to learn what tactics flow into each other, and I think even some seasoned GMs in that league still can make mistakes. So I can imagine Football Manager may have some similar settings for tacticians. Like setting Allie Bunson as a "Supporting Right Wingback" or a CAM as a "Shadow striker and so on.

I'm genuinely curious to see how you do as you learn how the game works and how you improve. If I can speak from experience scouting you in the SHL, you got an energy which matches how big the eyes are for the cat in your avatar. Now. . . I return to Pokemon.

Unfortunately, I'm even more clueless about FM. But talk with your manager and tactician, they probably have good ideas!
