The stakes were high for both Atletico Medellin and Port Royal entering academy matchday 9. Port Royal was top of table on 15 points(tied with Adowa Accra) and Atletico Medellin was a little behind with 12 points(tied with Istanbul F.K). Port Royal beat Medellin in the opening match of the academy season and a 2nd win today would have almost certainly dashed Medellin's title hopes while placing Port Royal in pole position. Fortunately for Medellin there were significant tactical shake ups since the 7-3 drubbing in week 1.
The first chance of the game came in the 4th minute. Medellin's 6, Sepp Holzlmayer, received a ball on the halfturn from central defender Legend Pork Tenderloin and crafted a line breaking pass through to striker Montalto. Montalto had dropped into the right halfspace, pulling the defender off his line, and upon receiving the ball was able to launch a through pass to Caroni Riveras. Riveras cut in from the right wing and it took a miraculous block from the lengthy centerback Sky Scraper to stop the opportunity.
Around the 10th minute Port Royal was able to create their first chance. Matt "Oopsie Wrongsport" Turk was able to steal the ball right outside Medellin's box and lay it off to Jonathon Munoz. He deftly moved it directly to striker Babatunde Agachuthu who sent it into the corner from point blank. Unfortunately for Port Royal Agachuthu could not get back onside before receiving the pass.
For the next 10 minutes the match remained fairly even. Both sides were able to get the ball into dangerous areas but couldn't get a great final shot off. Then the possession and chances started to shift in Medellin's favor.
Around the 32nd minute midfielder Juanito Perez received the ball in space near the center of the pitch. Port Royal was slow to close in and he had plenty of time to pick out a lobbed pass to midfielder Tommaso Cappellari who found the gab between the centerback and leftback. Cappellari took a great touch off his chest and immediately binned it in the opposite corner from a very tough angle to score his 2nd on the season.
1-0 Medellin
Just before half time a one-two between Rip Van Winkle and Cappellari got Cappellari free just outside the box where he quickly redirected it in to Manuel Montalto. Montalto was fouled roughly while receiving the ball and VAR awarded Medellin a penalty. Montalto lined up the penalty shot and was able to avoid the goalkeeper's reach, giving him 8 goals in the academy through 9 games.
2-0 Medellin
In the 77th minute a quick sequence took place, from Van Winkel to Cappellari to Montalto for a powerful top corner strike from just inside the penalty area. A controversial VAR review led to the goal being overturned as Montalto was just a fraction offsides. The Medellin crowd loudly voiced its displeasure with the official decision.
Around minute 87, wingback Lucas Peioxoto dribbled the ball deep into the opponents final third before sending in a grounded cross. It was deflected and bounced around to a few players before Cappellari recycled possession to Van Winkel. Van Winkel found Peioxoto right outside the box, Peioxoto took on his defender, dribbled past and fired a point blank shot into the opposite corner with his left foot. This marked the first goal of Peioxoto's academy career.
3-0 Medellin
In his postgame interview, Atletico Medellin's manager was effusive in his praise. He was adamant that keeping a clean sheet against the academy's top goal scoring team was Medellin's best achievement yet. The game ball was awarded to Tommaso Cappellari who not only scored the decisive goal but created the chance that led to the penalty as well. After matchday 9 there are four teams tied at the top of the academy table with 5 games to go. Adowa Accra, Atletico Medellin, Istanbul F.K., and Port Royal will all be homing to bring home the trophy.
