After the draft, there’s a bit of an evaluation period, where we all just pretend like everything is the same, and normal, but we’re actually all in a completely new place, new team, and the only thing that’s vaguely the same is the game of soccer. So that’s what we do. We practice, we play some scrimmages, and the coaches watch, take notes, and prepare their tactical plans for the season, and beyond.
There’s not a ton of feedback in those early days, as the coaches try to come up with a body of work, a status quo to build off of before they can comment on what is, what is changing, and what could be. There’s never enough time to feel confident that your average metrics are indicative of any given period’s performance, but for a couple of days, we hope that the time is enough.
Soon, we’ll have a mandate, an identity, and a plan. We’ll march forward, from a team with the first overall selection, to one with something lower next time. We’ll score a few more points, score a few more goals, and make a few better plays. All part of the plan, the march we walk, the buy in we’ve given, a promise of a glorious future.
