Shaheen's Strong Individual Season
#1
Fourteen goals. Nine assists.

By all accounts, those numbers make for quite the strong individual season for Reykjavik United right attacking midfielder George Shaheen.

The S23 campaign was a career year for the S18 draftee, who has emerged from primary table setter (15 assists to eight goals last season) to absolutely effective finisher, especially with an incredible flurry of a finish to end the season and set a new career mark in the 14 goals.

Shaheen notched his first career hat trick on Matchday 20 against Catalunya, netting 3 goals and posting his best ever average match grade of 9.95.

He followed that performance up with another goal-scoring effort in a 2-o win against [ACR] on Matchday 21.

And then to close things out on Matchday 22 against SFV, Shaheen scored two more goals and tacked on an assist, good for an average match grade of 9.64. That final game included an impressive 84.62 passing percentage and a perfect 100 heading percentage.

As a player with competitive spirit, Shaheen wants nothing more than to continue to get better and better as each game ends and a new one begins. He understands that father time lies just around the corner, and at some point despite all efforts to get better, his skills will wane and his accomplishments will diminish.

That makes accomplishments like those achieved during S23 all the more thrilling. It is proof that hard work and sticktoitiveness can work if one keeps their eye on the prize, blocks out noise, and commits to the grind of just doing a little bit here and there to get a tad bit better week in and week out.

Shaheen generally has not been one to look at career statistics. At least not to this point in his career. But it is at this point in his career, having tasted such individual success, that one starts to get tempted to do so.

Through four major league seasons, Shaheen now has 43 goals and 35 assists. If you count international play and the minor leagues, he has 60 to his name in both categories.

How high can Shaheen climb statistically? That remains to be seen.

But he’s willing to keep putting in the work to find out.
