Character Development- Tadgh O’Hurley (Academy)
#1
Sweat beaded off his brow as he came trotting down the tunnel. The coach slapped him a high five as he ran past. ‘Great game O’Hurley! Keep that up. Reporters looking for you.’
Tadgh walked in and was surrounded by reporters. He heard questions fired off from every direction and his name called out from seemingly every corner. Eventually some semblance of order came through and a reporter given the go ahead to ask their questions.
‘It’s you first season here, you are 4-0. How has it been?’
‘It’s a bit of a whirlwind to be honest’ Tadgh said. ‘I had never imagined everything would move so quickly. The team has really come together and we honestly seem to fit quite well together. There has been a lot of progress in playing our system even when things look out of hand. I think it was our second game I got beat from trying to cover for another defender and when the ball got played back out wide I was out of position for a block and they scored on a clean shot. Coach showed us after the game and showed us the times where we followed the system and the layers worked so we have all just been doing better at doing our own jobs and trusting each other.’
There was a bit more commotion ‘Tadgh, you scored your first goal and were declared Man of the Match today. Can you explain how that feels.’
He blasted a smile across his face, ‘Yeah! That’s cool, wild eh!? Yeah, no. I saw the throw come into play and we moved it forward off the head and everyone was kind of moving forward and then instead of putting it towards goal he headed it back and dropped it right in front of me. So I put it on a tee and yeah it really was just a perfect setup, clear lane and I found a way to find some space in the side of the net. Really exciting.’
‘And that was quite the celebration!’
He laughed a bit sheepishly ’well yeah. I wasn’t expecting anything off that throw and for it to land just there, it was unreal to have that materialize in front of me. We were already in the lead so maybe it was a bit much, but in the heat of the moment, it being my first and it being such a gift, I don’t regret it that’s all.
The manager stepped up to the podium,‘That’s all for now, thanks guys.’ He patted O’Hurley on the back and motioned for him to head out of the room and towards the team room. Tadgh stood up and made his way towards the team room, gave a little wave as he squinted off against the camera flashes and hurried out of the room and down the hall. This was turning out to be quite the experience after all. Tadgh was just getting started and he wasn’t sure how far he would go, but he was certain he’d have fun getting there
