¡Viva España! and with that, welcome back to the final part of my World Cup series.
Wow, what a terrible game by Argentina. And I mean that in every way, not just regarding the football they played. We are used to seeing less exciting football once the stakes are high. The yearly UCL terror ball by certain teams is a good example of that. But what Argentina delivered, or rather, failed to deliver, was a new low. As Toni Kroos said it best, on Sunday, "Football won". The fact, that only one player from Argentina was sent off is a miracle, could have easily been three. And thats not even accounting for them failing to shot the ball on goal until the second half of overtime. Additionally lashing out on your opponents after the final whistle is certainly a choice, especially if you are not only sore losers, but sore winners if we look back at the semi finals against England.
A day before the final we had the pleasure to be able to watch what happens when two teams as good as France and England play against each other when the stakes are low. A beautiful game with so many ups and downs, it felt like a rollercoaster, even for neutral fans. 10 goals, many chances, easy to watch, there is nothing more you could have asked of a third place decider.
Overall this World Cup has been great in terms of the football played, not so much the rest of the show. We had underdog runs and a lot of storylines, a great last dance for the GOAT, and arguably the best 4 teams battled it out in the end.
