The season was winding down, and against all odds we'd been able to mostly keep pace with Hollywood FC throughout the season, even with my brutal slump of scoring just two goals and adding two assists in 11 matches throughout the season. If we could manage to beat Hollywood in their own stadium, we'd pull even and if we could somehow manage to win by a few goals we'd even take the lead on goal differential.
Just past the start of the fourteenth minute, we had managed to get a free kick. On this play, I was set up just outside the top of the box, ready to jump on a rebound if Dybala's shot came back out to me. It was indeed headed back out in my direction by the defender, and I settled the ball and shot it quickly. My shot wasn't right to the corner, but it almost froze the goalie in place and blew past the keeper for the opening goal of the match. Having not scored a goal for more than half the season, it was a massive relief to be able to snap that drought.
In the 21st minute, we doubled the lead when a broken play off a corner resulted in a Kika Bahl shot deflecting off a defender and in. The score stayed that way until the 50th minute, when Takeda Takahashi picked up a ball at his feet and quickly smashed it past the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. If the score held, we would be up by one goal in the differential count. Unfortunately, the last 20 or so minutes of the match would end up being played without me as I tweaked something and had to come off, but the rest of the team clutched up brilliantly and brought home the clean sheet to at least for the moment put us into first place for the championship race.
