Cal Labovitch finds new home with Athenai: 'The manager told me upfront that I would be in the starting 11'

A new environment, with new people, new languages and above all: new football. It took some getting used to for Swiss player Cal Labovitch, when he exchanged Bern for the Greek Athênai Football Club last season. "In the meantime I'm pretty used to life in Greece, it feels like I'm in the right place here.", Cal noted.

Labovitch started this season with his home team in Bern. He was an important player for the Bern Bears during the fixtures earlier in the season. Nevertheless, Labovitch opted to leave Bern after breaking into the first team squad. "I'm 19 now, I think it was about time to start showing my skills in a different environment" he says.

"I also had that conversation with the Bern coaches and manager," continues Labovitch. "I asked them: Don't you think it's time for me to go play somewhere? They wanted me to stay, but they understood that I wanted to test my skills elsewhere. They were very honest in seeing that staying with the Bears wouldn't work." You eventually have to choose for yourself. It was time to take that step."

Late in the season, Labovitch left for Greece, but was also close to signing a contract with another team. "Athens contacted me the second I became available. I had a good feeling with the club from the start. It is also a fresh start in another country. The managers ensured me I had a good shot at a starting spot, that's what pulled me accross the line".

Since his arrival, Labovitch has been making plenty of minutes in Greece, often as a starting player. As with the bears, Labovitch is being played in an attacking role on the right wing, feedig crosses to the guys in the box. A position he is very comfortable and happy with.
