Player Development - Tadgh O'Hurley
#1
So its been a wild ride in the Academy. Tadgh had played 14 matches, and scored a goal and received Player of the Match honours just once. He also added a couple of assist for a total of three points as a wingback. He was a distribution machine from the back making 482/534 attempted passes good for over a 90% completion rate. A good number of those passes were key passes as well. He was fairly steady in putting crosses into the box, however the rest of the team was unable to capitalize on them, whether it was a bad delivery, or reception was hard to say, but ~20% of the time things worked out. He was never dominate in the air, winning less than half of the heading battles and despite running the wing constantly only was credited for 15 successful dribbles. Defensively he was better, but not as good as he wanted to be. with a 72% tackling proficiency and a few key tackles he was a bit more than mediocre, and his 27 interceptions and 34 clearances definitely helped the team and didn't put them at risk of conceding. He was noted as not being at fault to a mistake resulting in a goal all season and despite committing 18 fouls only had 2 yellows on the season. He had 9 blocks and 6 shot blocks and somehow found himside offside once as well. He finished with a match rating just a hair over 7 and travelled over 182KM on the pitch over the course of the season good for 17th in the league in distance travelled. When you look at the Academy league development chart Tadgh fell down to the mid 20's despite a strong start to the season. He knew it was because he had let his foot off the gas after the first couple of games, his focus had changed to something else and he was distracted both on and off the pitch. He tried to make up for it at the end of the season, but he definitely did not leave it all on the line last season. He wasn't overly confident going into the draft. He had been contacted by a few managers, most of them asking how willing he would be to move to a different position or even completely change his playstyle all together. He usually just said he would do whatever it took to make a team and was just hoping to be a part of something.
Draft day arrived and Tadgh was there with his teammates awaiting to hear his name called. He was laughing and carrying on so much that he didn't even hear his name called. He had turned away after the 14th pick thinking there would be a delay between the first and second rounds however he had forgotten that because of the expansion there were a few compensation picks that came in at the end of the first round. When Tex Star said Tadgh you're called. He looked up and saw his name on the screen. Montreal!! that was amazing! he got to stay in Canada! He more or less sprinted to the podium, ripping off his sportscoat as he jumped up onto the stage skipping all but the first step. He walked up to the managers with a massive smile on his face as then handed him the jersey. He turned to face the camera's holding the kit between him and the managers. After a few flashes, he quickly pulled the jersey down over his head and looked down at the emblem on the chest. This is it. This is going to be home SFV/Montreal is probably the best place he could have landed with Reykjavik United being the only other club he was hoping for. He walked off stage with the managers deep in conversation. He couldn't wait to get things started in Montreal.
