Jailbird - A Vercetti story - Season 2, Chapter 8 Final Chapter, Words - 429
#1
His eyes went up towards the pale sky, the light breeze of the season pelting the few that he could see nearby and the stones in front of him. His mind warped as he saw that familiar name on a bronze plaque.

All he could remember from his parents was that fatidical day. He eyed the food in front of him, a mere tuna sandwich that had been thrown together in a rush. He could've complained about it but given this was the first time in a week he didn't find some ashes nearby, likely from his mother's habit of smoking the fourth of a pack per day, it was probably as good as it could get.

He could also remember his father talking loud about a "major service", the deal that was gonna score them the big bucks, their words not his. His parents didn't even bother saying bye as they left, it was all going automatic for them. Too automatic, perhaps, in retrospect. But hey, that was his relationship with them... or rather, the lack of one. Even the person he was now honouring wasn't so much a father, he was a friend. One that he just happened to meet and one he also just happened to lose. There wasn't much he could do about the thugs that murdered Narazaki that he didn't do, after all.

From a distance, Jiro and Ginger watched, the two held together by a side-hug. By now, things were going smoothly between them and Squall had always been a nice guy to them, something that repeatedly surprised the Japanese national, who expected far worse out of the well-known grumpy defender.

Jiro: You know... saying with all respect, he's a bit weird, isn't he?
Ginger: Always has been and probably always will. But few things in life touch him like that guy.
Jiro: You ever met him?
Ginger: No... the only person who knew something about it beforehand was Rup but even he only mentioned hearing about the guy before the murder.
Jiro: ...And the police?
Ginger: Nothing yet. No cameras nearby, even.
Jiro: ...For real? In Tokyo, of all places?

Squall turned around once he was done mourning, approaching them.

Squall: Alright. We're good to go.
Ginger: You sure? I mean... it's a Sunday.
Jiro: ...We probably should return early and get some practice for that Pedagogy exam.
Ginger: Yeah, but we don't wanna get in your way, Squall.
Squall: You came with me out of your own volition, it's all fine to go, anyway.

He briefly looked back at the tombstone, smiling slightly. He won it and the poor guy wasn't even around to see it. How cruel.
