Ready to go (again)

German centerback Abdoulaye Camavinga finished his first professional campaign with the SSL's F.C. Kaapstad on a quiet note, as the team fought bravely to overcome a midseason slump. In the end, they missed out on the promotion for Division 1 and will remain in Division 2 for another season. While not exactly they had hoped for - this is not a total bummer, considering Kaapstad just played their inaugural season in pro football.

Camavinga received good reviews from experts for his rookie season, playing without too many costly mistakes and bookings from the reference. He still ranked amongst the Division 2's leaders in interceptions. His match ratings were also convincing for a first year player. Obviously he still has to put up a goal contribution, but he sticked to his role as a no-nonsense centerback and fulfilled it as such.

The squad features a couple of promising players in Kalenga LuaLua, Lochlann O'Rourke, Ariadna Maradona or Jakup Larsen (not to forget recent draft picks Dexter Hall and Kevin Zimmer) and is only looking to improve their quality (and win total) from here on.

The young German looks forward to pairing up with rookie Dexter Hall. "It's always nice to have some competition going at your position. He's a shorter lad but feisty nonetheless so it's going to be a battle in every training session. Dexter will help us out tremendously, as will Kevin in the midfield," said Camavinga. "They're both giving us some much needed depth going forward while we will take on our goal of promotion once again."

South Africans are eager to see their team succeed, putting up a ton of support throughout the inaugural season. If Kaapstad manages to stay within the fight for promotion again, expect that level of support to stay steady. If their team is willing to steadily to put the work in, that may not be impossible after all.
