Coming in to the season it’s no secret that the Sydney FC roster looked a lot different than it’s division 1 winning roster from just a season ago. Lots of the roster was moved out or retired, a new GM was put in place and a team that went from finishing at the top of the table in Season 5, had it’s sight set on rebuilding.
Sydney FC was extremely active in the free agent market, putting in waiver claims for countless players to try and put together some sort of roster to help get them through the season. However, what was not expected, was that a group of waiver wire pickups and a couple of veterans would be – at the time this is written – just 6 points out of top spot in division 1. Perhaps more impressive was Sydney holding the top Division 1 spot for a couple of match days to start the season.
Sydney is playing a very structured game, relying heavily on a solid defensive line and most importantly, a goalkeeper who is currently playing lights out. If they want to compete, that will have to be the tactics for them, keep the ball out of the net and capitalize on the chances they get. While the season started off incredibly hot for Sydney, they have levelled off a little bit as they currently sit 5th with a 3-2-3 record. However, they have a core group of players who are improving every day and trying to help this team win games. This is surely the group the management team will hope to keep together moving forward and build around. Only time will tell where Sydney will end up when the season comes to a close, but the one thing that’s certain is nobody expected this team to be competing and not sitting at the bottom of the table.
