This is not my first time in a sim league. I've GMed in the ISFL for a year and a half, and was PBE HO for about a year. With that said, I have a little bit of experience behind me when I say this - the SSL seems to do things differently, and I like it.
1) It has a casual vibe to it. I don't have to grind for money here to become/stay relevant and I think that is really cool. I can just.. do shit.
2) I seem to earn a lot of TPE. Yeah, you need a lot of it to actually do anything, but just earning bigger numbers feels nice. that's psychology for you.
3) There are layers of stuff... removed. I can write this and claim it. If it's deemed to be league related (and as a critique of the league, I do hope that this will be)... but that's just so easy. I love it.
4) The sim is so damn good. Football Manager is up with OOTP as the best sports simulation game on the market, and the league uses it really nicely, for example utilising replays as a presentation feature.
In short, I am enjoying this league so far. I hope to continue.
