Glenn Smart has had an interesting rookie season in the SSL. In a year where he started out as a defensive midfielder entering the professional game, he has quickly progressed into a center back that is learning how to hold his own in a very young back four. Initially, he was being beaten to everything, on the ground and in the air but as the season progressed, so did he. His positioning improved to the point that he wasn’t getting caught out by pacey strikers as frequently and he learned to beat much taller and more experienced players in the air through a combination of technique and a little more spring in his jump — something he had worked very hard on in training with his coaches. Towards the end of the campaign, he felt like he was starting to get to the point where he could actually compete but there were still the odd game where he was just completely outclassed by much more experienced attackers.
As we head into Glenn Smarts second season, it’s important that he solidifies his position within the team and continues to develop into a great center back for a Division 2 team — while AC Romana look to push slightly further up the table and compete for the promotion positions. It won’t be easy and it’s a long road but with hard work and consistency, he’ll get there.
