For this year the league officials over at the SSL planned something special:
A nations tournament with a twist. Instead of each nation sending their players and duking out who is the best nation in SSL football they instead divided the world into regions which spiced up the competition and allowed for some interesting combinations.
Part of this combination is the "North Sea Commonwealth", a mix of northern football prodigies like from Iceland and...well Scotland.
For Duncan Maxwell, captain of 2nd dvision SSL team Montreal, this has been a dream come true as he is finally able to represent his nation on the international scene.
However, things were looking grim as North Sea's lineup consisted of many old players who face inactivity, overall the highest inactive to active quote of the entire tournament. In addition the drew heavyweights in the Dutch Deutsch Federation and the Welsh-English Alliance which both have the luxury to have a deep cadre of high grade players.
Furthermore, due to their thin roster North Sea was forced to play with a very defensive formation, which saw Maxwell transitioning to DM, luckily a role he can still fill pretty well, being able to use his reat speed for a CD in a place where you have traditionally more room to make a sprint.
To the surprise of most Nort Sea managed to beat out the DDF by 1 goal, which meant a Quarterfinal ticket since DDF also lost against the Welshlanders.
In the ddirect head to head however in a British intercultural conflict of Scotland vs Wales and England, North Sea found themselves beaten in convincing ashion as they couldn't muster a goal-hungry offense.
Now in QF anything can happen and North Sea might be able to upset an offensive minded team with their deep defending and counter-heavy style.
In any case, reaching the QF out of that murderous group has been a success already. Also they have the greatest logo out of them all, dont @ me.
