How has reddit affected the SSL?

Hello everyone, as many of you may know, there has been a huge increase in player count in the SSL server due to the post from North on the football manager subreddit (As seen below). I myself saw the post from the reddit and decided that I would join in on this league, as I can imagine a few people reading this have as well. The post as of 03/02/2025 has 66 upvotes

So how has this post actually effected the SSL? Well, if it was not obvious from the introductions chat being constantly pinged, it has made for a large influx of players. This can be seen in the data below:

I acquired this data by sorting the message from MEE6 during specific days, while only searching for messages in the introduction channel. This feature can be found in the top right of discord.

In this data, we can see just how well the reddit post did in terms of bringing in new players. On the 1st of February, we can see only 2 people joined the sever, and on the 2nd, another 4 joined. On the 3rd, when the reddit post was made, we can see a massive boost of 33 in results, aka welcomes into the server. That is 27 more than the previous 2 days combined, a 450% increase! Server-wide, it is almost a 10% user increase, and this number is still growing.

As a matter of fact, the 20th season is on course to being the biggest season growth-wise.

S14 - 14
S15 - 9
S16 - 19
S17 - 24
S18 - 48
S19 - 28

As we can see from the data above, the highest growing season was season 18, with 48 players joining. In this current season (S20), as of 00:11AM 04/02/2025, we have had 43 players join, setting this season on the course of having the highest amount of players joined in a singular season. When you compare the upvotes on the reddit post (66), to the amount of players that have joined (43), it is easy to see the correlation between the two.

What do we take away from this?

I believe the biggest take away from this is that in order for the server to grow more and more, we need to keep advertising the server in the appropriate areas. The football manager sub reddit was a perfect place, due to it being the game the server is based on, but there are many other places, not even just on reddit, where people could post and spread the word of the server. This will ensure both the quality and longevity of the league.

A few other takeaways:
  • Despite the leagues slow start for the first couple seasons, it is beginning to grow into a very large community.
  • Football manager based forums and communities are where the discord should focus their attention in order to gain more traction.

A small thing to note, the numbers are numbers of active? (maybe also inactive) players still playing in the league right now (at a team?), most of the early seasons just have players who have since retired and some recreated, some left the league.

But for the rest great article, and the last few seasons have indeed been very active ones.
