Port Royal – The dominant force of the Season 19 Academy!
After the final whistle of match day 1 fixtures blew and the despondent Port Royal players trudged off the pitch on the back of a resounding defeat at the hands of Stockholm, not many would have predicted what happened next!
Match day 2 brought Adowa Accra to the Jamaican shores and Port Royal bounced back in style from their opening day defeat, a future star was born that day…. Xavius Kenderlin, remember the name! A subsequent 5 additional victories followed this result to put match day 1 at the back of everyone’s memories, Port Royal meant business. Their business was goals and as long as they scored more than the opposition that is all that mattered (spoiler: they quite often did!). Notable games on this winning run included a 5-3 goal feast against PS Jakarta and a resounding 6-2 win over Sydney City in Match day 7, Kenderlin popping up with 2 during that match.
Match day 8 brought about a bump in the road, Adowa Accra exacting revenge on their title contenders with a 4-2 victory, dampening some Jamaican spirit, goals from Lasso and Albinson proving to be nothing more than consolations. Sticking with the theme of revenge brings about match day 9 and this time it is Port Royal’s turn to taste the sweetness, Stockholm arrived in Kingston looking to do the double over the Black and Green Army but they left empty handed, falling to a 5-1 defeat. Port Royal were resurgent! A subsequent victory over a team that couldn’t buy a win, in PS Jakarta, left pundits in no doubt… Port Royal were a serious force and at this rate were going to take some stopping!
Match Day 11 was a timely reminder of the competitiveness of the academy league as Victoria Falls held the Jamaican boys to a 2-2 draw, goals from Kenderlin and Johnson were not enough and the result felt like 2 points dropped instead of 1 point gained.
Match day 12 and 13 proved the pivotal moment and in fact it was Port Royal’s victory over Atletico in the penultimate game that secured the league title! A dramatic affair which saw Port Royal take an early lead on 4 minutes, the dream start, and it was that boy again Xavius Kenderlin! The lead was snatched away in the 47th minute as Matias Xavier dispatched his penalty to take the teams into the break level. A tight 2nd half ensued but as the clocked ticked toward extra time Sam Albinson stepped up with arguably the most important goal of Port Royal’s season. They had done it! The boys from Kingstown Harbour had proved all the (match day one) doubters wrong and had secured the title!
The final match day found Port Royal’s players still in party mode and they were dispatched by a ruthless Sydney City. But no one could take away what they had achieved this season! The winners of the Season 19 Academy league: Port Royal FC!
