As we are nearing the end of Season 21, the majors title race is looking to be one of the most contested championship campaigns we've seen in a long time. While we have seen a few close races between 2 clubs that went down to the final matchday, this season could potentially see three different clubs be still in contention as we enter the final matchday. Those three clubs being Hollywood FC, Reykjavik United and União São Paulo.
What is particularly unique about the title race this season is the fact that none of the clubs will be meeting each other the final three matchdays. There will be no 6-point swings in any direction. It will all be about how well these clubs can beat the clubs below them. Can any of the midtable or bottom table clubs upset any of these three?
So, what still stands between each club and ultimate victory?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hollywood FC
AC Romana (7th)
Tokyo SC (4th)
Schwarzwälder Fußballverein (6th)
After a hard-fought tie against Uniao Sao Paulo, Hollywood manages to stay in the lead with a whole 3 points. This advantage is brought down by a big disadvantage. They have the statistically hardest opponents left compared to the other two still competing teams. However, even if they fail a game, they still have the tiebreaker advantage. They have superiour or equal head to head results, while also having the biggest goal difference. This is Hollywood's season to lose, and they don't seem keen on missing the opportunity.
Matchday 16:
AC Romana
Romana had a rough start to the season, with their only points coming from a win against a rebuilding Catalunya, and a tie against a rising Shanghai team. The second half of their season has been a bit more promising. A win against Buenos Aires and a dominant win against CD Tenochtitlan has caused them to leapfrog to 7th place. They will be entering the match against Hollywood with high spirits.
And the first match earlier this season does show compelling potential, with Hollywood just barely getting a win. However, stats were hugely in favour of Hollywood. And it was also a period where Hollywood was in a mild slump. Could Romana still achieve some magic here?
Matchday 17:
Tokyo SC
Tokyo will likely be the deciding factor for two of the three teams that are facing them in the final three matchdays. Tokyo has gained a massive power boost with the transfer of Beaklie Eilish, an elite defender previously part of USP. She could be the wall that either helps her old team win the title by holding Hollywood at bay, or to make her old team suffer heartbreak again.
Tokyo has been a very strong team throughout this whole season, unfortunately failing out of the title picture due to a few unlucky losses and ties.
They are also only one of two teams who have managed to beat Hollywood this season, achieving a solid 5-3 victory. This was also during the slump period that Hollywood was going through. With Hollywood looking like a different team in the second half of this season, can they redeem themselves against the team on the other side of the pacific?
Matchday 18:
Schwarzwälder Fußballverein
Schwarzwalder has been a difficult team to place. They have had great success against historical rivals Reykjavik, but they have also managed to drop points and even lose against bottom of the table clubs such as Shanghai, Romana and Catalunya. They currently have a very intriguing record of 5 wins, 5 ties and 5 losses record.
Their first game against Hollywood has also been a convincing 2-0 defeat. However, they might find some of their old form back for the final matchday, as their two matches before it will be against CD Tenochtitlan and AC Romana. Two teams that SFV might feel confident about being able to beat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reykjavik United
CA Buenos Aires (5th)
CD Tenochtitlan (8th)
AC Romana (7th)
An ever-looming threat behind everyone’s title chances, Reykjavik United have set themselves up to potentially snatch the title once again. They have one huge thing going for them: they have the easiest opponents statistically. However, they will have to work hard to beat Hollywood’s GD. Both matches against Hollywood were a tie, so they are equal on head-to-head results.
Matchday 16:
CA Buenos Aires
CA Buenos Aires is another team which is difficult to place. They lost or tied against teams that should be below them, but managed to win against top teams (coincidentally, against Hollywood again. It appears Hollywood struggles against midtable teams.)
The last match between Reykjavik United and Buenos Aires has been a close affair, with Reykjavik United barely securing the win with only a 0-1 victory.
While Buenos Aires has not been picking up any victories in the last two matches, their goal tally has been quite large. The Reykjavik defence will have to be wary and not underestimate the team who caused them to be the champions last season.
Matchday 17:
CD Tenochtitlan
CD Tenochtitlan is on track to match their performance from last season, and all they need is 4 more points. With their next opponents being SFV, Reykjavik and Catalunya, they will be likely looking at a path of winning against Catalunya and getting a tie against either SFV or Reykjavik.
CD Tenochtitlan has been one of the most enigmatic teams in the Majors. And again, we see another team which made Reykjavik struggle. Another 1-0 victory for Reykjavik. Though, with CDT entering their worst form of the season so far, it might be a high hill to climb.
Matchday 18:
AC Romana
Our first repeat team is AC Romana, a team which will be Hollywood’s first obstacle to championship victory.
Without repeating too much of what was said earlier, Romana has a tough run of games to end the season. With them being near the bottom of the table, they might feel very desperate and have nothing to lose on the final matchday if the two earlier matches don’t go their way.
AC Romana has managed to give a challenge to Reykjavik early in the season, as their bout ended in a 3-5 victory for Reykjavik.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
União São Paulo
Tokyo SC (4th)
Shanghai Dragons FC (10th)
CA Buenos Aires (5th)
Another season, another nightmare scenario for the Brazilian team as they are currently trailing the leaders by 3 points, while also having a worse GD than both the leaders and point equals Reykjavik.
Along with that, two of their final three opponents are known to be giant slayers. Can Uniao Sao Paulo be the team that takes its turn of beating the odds? Can they finally achieve their dreams after many seasons of heartbreak?
Matchday 16:
Tokyo
Our second repeat team. Without repeating myself too much again, Tokyo can be the team that puts the nail in the coffin for USP’s title dreams immediately.
The first meeting between Tokyo and USP ended in dominating fashion in favour of USP. With the stakes being higher than before, will there be a significant difference in the scores?
Matchday 17:
Shanghai Dragons FC
The only saving grace for USP’s fixture list is last placed Shanghai Dragons. While the Dragons have the ability to surprise opponents and provide a good battle, they either start performing too late in the match or they run out of steam.
Their point count is however a bit deceiving, as they have a large number of draws. And they come against good opposition as well.
In fact, USP was close to ending up being one of Shanghai’s draws, were it not for a header by Kirkpatrick which just barely made it in.
With Shanghai only becoming better as the season goes on and as their youth player continue gaining experience, this matchup might end up being a dangerous surprise for USP if not taken seriously.
Matchday 18:
CA Buenos Aires
And finally, we have CA Buenos Aires again. This final matchday matchup will awaken many nightmares for USP fans, who had to witness Victoria Snooks score a championship destroying goal against their team in the final few seconds of last season’s final matchday game.
CABA will be hoping to win the best of the rest race against Tokyo and SFV by showing a good performance in the final three games. With Tokyo being ahead by a whole 5 points, CABA might be looking for a dangerous desperation play when they face against continental rivals USP in the final matchday.
Their previous match against USP did not go to plan for CABA, as they ended up losing 1-4. However, with the circumstances being very different now, will Viktoria Snooks’ CABA be once again the looming Grim Reaper of USP?
Will USP be able to beat their demons and redeem themselves by fixing last season's ultimate mistake?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And this will be it. No matter the final results, season 21 will go down in history as one of the most memorable and most tense seasons in the history of the SSL.
The final three matchdays promise to be a spectacle, one where only the best team will come out on top.
Thank you for reading.
