Mr. Howell, I presume? - by Ceri Daniels (Swansea Sports Express)
While the explorer Henry Morton Stanley showed a Welshman can make a name for himself in Africa, it is still an unusual destination for young Welsh footballers. Despite this, Swansea local Victor Howell has signed with Victoria Falls Eagles for the coming season.
The left-footed defender has only had a few days to get to know his new team, but says the club already has a positive atmosphere around it.
“The lads have been amazing so far,” Howell told us from a tree he had climbed at a local wildlife park. “There are a lot of new signings so we’ve been getting to know the area together. We went to the actual Victoria Falls yesterday and Luke Walker pretended he was going to push me over the edge. He’s a good laugh.”
The Eagles have also been hard at work on the training pitch under the guidance of Italian manager Giacomo Santori, himself a former Victoria Falls player, and Howell is confident they can hit the ground running.
“The gaffer is already showing a lot of confidence in me and I know I can learn a lot from him while I’m here. He has a clear vision of what he wants from us and I think we will be successful under his leadership.”
If Howell and his teammates can live up to those expectations Eagles fans will be flying high come the end of the season.
