How have Shanghai and Magyar compared to last season?

To anyone paying attention, it is obvious that both Shanghai Dragons and Rapid Magyar have had an explosive improvement when compared to last season, even though we are only, at the time of writing, a third of the way through the season. Let's have a look at how much they have improved, as well as how they have managed to pull off this unprecedented rapid rise.

Shanghai

Shanghai Dragons

On the surface, it appears that Shanghai are not having anything of a special season whatsoever, and at the surface level that may be correct. However, that could not be further from the truth. Last season, Shanghai ended their season with 18 games played and 14 points, giving them an average of 0.78 points per game. While this is obviously not amazing, do keep in mind that Shanghai as well as its minor league counterpart are both very new to the SSL.

What really matters, however, is how they are doing this season. As of writing this, they have played 7 games, in which they have managed to score 8 points, which gives us an average of 1.18 points per game. Doing some simple math, it appears they are on track to get around 26 points this season, a massive improvement from last season. This would be ignoring the fact 2 whole new teams have joined since last season, however, so converting it back to the original 18 games played, they would have about 21 points by the end of the season. This is still a huge improvement, especially for a team so new to the SSL.

Overall, it appears that Shanghai Dragons are destined to fly past their previous point record after just three season in the SSL. With a hopeful 18+ points and an improved average of 0.40 points per game, it is to no doubt that Shanghai must have done something extraordinary over the preseason.

Magyar

Rapid Magyar

Now, onto Shanghai's purple counterpart, Rapid Magyar. Rapid Magyar has had an amazing start their season, one that is exciting for its players, and terrifying for literally anyone else in the minors league. Magyars last season was a definite improvement for the season before that, racking up 14 points compared to the previous of 6. This gives us an average points per game of 0.78, the exact same as Shanghai Dragons! The key difference between the two teams was that while Rapid had quite a few more goals, 10 over the course of the season, they also conceded a lot more, a difference of 9 more.

Now this season, Rapid Magyar look like a completely different team. 7 matches played, 19 points and unbeaten thus far, putting them 2nd, only behind on goal difference. Doing the previous math, this gives us an average points per game of 2.71, an absolutely phenomenal improvement. Again, being essentially a third of the way through the season, it appears that we very well may see 57 points next to Magyars badge by the end of the season which would be the highest point finish by a team ever recorded in the SSL. It is to be said, however, that anything can happen during the season, and all it takes is a bad or unlucky game and Magyar could see themselves struggling to fight their way back up, especially with Paris looking so good this season as well.

Overall, this season for Magyar has been nothing short of spectacular. Going from a team that fought for just a point every game to being joint top with a team that's been in the league for much longer than them is not just luck, but exceptional planning and transfers from the managers and scouts.

But how?

This all raises the question, what exactly has happened to both Shanghai Dragons and Rapid Magyar this season in order for them to increase in quality so quickly? I believe it comes down to two different reasons, natural progression and smart transfers. But what exactly do i mean?

Natural Progression

It is only natural that as a newer team compared to most of the table, they are bound to only improve. Whereas other teams already have their foundations, of which they can both improve and regress, Shanghai and Magyar are only able to improve, and having access to a large number of draft picks in their first season definitely helped build that foundation up.

Smart Transfers

The entire team behind Shanghai and Rapids transfers have done an amazing job. Noticing Magyars weakness in defense, they acquired Allie Bunson as an amazing defensive option that can also go up and score. When Snorlax was lost, they brought in James Asprey, a keeper who has truly made the gloves his own since coming in. It is also worth mentioning Greg Evil, who has enhanced Magyars attack even further to give them more options up front. While these are just a few of the signings made in the clubs 3 transfer windows, there are many others who has perfectly slotted in and fulfilled what the team needed in the moment.

In evaluation, the future is looking bright for both of the clubs within the organisation. Such huge improvements in such little amount of time is exactly what the teams need in order to compete successfully, and soon, both Shanghai Dragons and Rapid Magyar could be a common name in the top place of their retrospective league
