Academy Task 5: Clutch factor in the Academy League
#1
For the sake of this post and Analysis we will define "clutch" as any goal that allowed a team to either draw or win the game after the 80 minute mark, after reviewing and collecting data from the 14 Academy MD videos I found some interesting things that I would like to share, first of all I'll attach the table that contains the raw data.

There were 9 instances in which a match outcome was decided by late goal, be it an equalizer or a winner, no player scored or assisted a late game goal more than once and out of the 9 goals, 2 came from Legend players and the remaining 7 came out from regular academy players, all the assists (when applicable) came out from academy players.

But how were the teams affected? on the positive side Adowa Accra was the most "clutch" team on academy, making 4 goals after the 80 minute mark, rescuing 3 draws and a win. All the other teams that scored late and qualified for this analysis only did so once each.

As for the other side of the coin, the most affected team that didn't manage to hold out for the last 10 minutes was Victoria Falls, on two occasions a drawn game turned into a loss and a game that they were winning turned into a draw, PS Jakarta are second in this regard, losing points in 2 different occasions due to a late game goal.

So, let us ask the question, what if there were no late game winners? that's the question that sparked this analysis to be done in the first place, interestingly enough, the top of the table remains mostly the same, PS Jakarta trails Atletico Medellin for second while tied on points, but the Colombian side has a better GD than them (trust me it doesn't show up in the table but it is the case), this also applies to Istanbul and Victoria in 4th place. Lastly the biggest change is Adowa Accra which ends up dropping to last place as they have been the team that has benefited the most out of anyone in this made up statistic.

A couple of interesting facts that I didn't get to mention:
  • Volkan Kiziltaş effort against PS Jakarta was the latest goal that qualified for this analysis, coming in at 90+4 minutes.
  • Every team in the league had at least one game that involved a late game goal.
  • Port Royal, Atletico Medellin, Stockholm and Victoria were the teams that had both a game drawn/lost or win/drawn in the last 10 minutes of the game.
  • 3 Goals (33%) came at the 88 Minute mark and 2 (22%) at the 84 minute mark. No other particular minute was repeated.

The clutch factor is real. Because I saw Turk's name on the spreadsheet. In all seriousness, great analysis!
