Adowa Accra: A Seasons review

With the Academy season having come to an end, it feels like the right time to look back and reflect on Adowa Accra’s campaign, a season that started with promise, delivered flashes of brilliance, but ultimately ended in frustration.

The Weight of Expectation

At the start of the season, the bookies surprisingly had Adowa Accra as favourites to win the league. Expectations were sky-high, but the early performances didn’t quite live up to the hype.
Two opening draws did little to inspire confidence. The team started in a classic 4-2-3-1 formation but struggled to convert chances into goals.
Then came a turning point, a convincing 4–0 victory over İstanbul F.K. that seemed to kick-start Accra’s season.

Tactical Shifts and Momentum

A 4–2 loss to Atlético prompted a rethink. The manager switched to a 4-1-4-1 setup, and it proved to be exactly what the team needed.
Over the next four games, Accra picked up three convincing wins and a draw. Bob Berendsen bagged a hat-trick in one match, while Freddy Adu netted four in another, the attack was finally clicking.

This strong run lifted Adowa Accra to the top of the table, vindicating early predictions and giving fans hope that the title charge was on.

A Painful Decline

But the fairy tale didn’t last. Midway through the season, Accra’s form collapsed.

Bob Berendsen who untill this point was one of their standout performers, only found the net once in the final seven games. In that same stretch, the team managed just a single point.
It was a frustrating collapse for a squad that had shown so much early potential.

The Numbers Tell the Story

The xG table suggests there was more in this season for Accra. Statistically, they ranked fourth in performance, not sixth showing that sloppiness in the final third cost them dearly.
They created the chances, but the finishing touch just wasn’t there when it mattered most.

Standout Performers

Despite the disappointing finish, a few players stood out across the campaign:
  • Jay Cue Jr. The pacey wing-back was a creative force all season, ending with 9 assists.
  • Freddy Adu The reliable striker finished with 10 goals.
  • Bob Berendsen  The engine on the wing and highest-rated player with an average rating of 7.19, contributing 8 goals and 4 assists.

Final Thoughts

For Adowa Accra, this season will be remembered as a “what could have been.”
Moments of dominance showed that the team had the quality to compete with anyone, but consistency was lacking.
Still, with the draft upcoming, it should be no surprise if some of these players will be in high demand.

I swear I already commented on this but it must not have saved.

Great article, excellent use of data and graphs to support your narrative and breakdown. Accra was definitely a team capable of beating anyone, shame they never could stay consistent.

5/5
