Stay Down Kid Kofi Ansah - Point Task Article
#1
“Lower league games are the worst”. That is what Kofi was always thinking, while he was playing in Northern Valderama games with Didsbury FC. It was not the dirty tackles or the cheap Astro turf most teams were using. Neither the semi-drunk audience, that were calling him names. It was the trash talk. Those people in the North really knew how to get under his skin.
One of those times was against one of the lowest teams in the league. Unprofessional fouling was a constant thing through-out the whole 90 minutes and he will always wonder if that scar under his left thigh was worth that 1 point they got from this game. But Kofi will never forget that moment, that they received that late equaliser. When he lost his opponent, fall flat on the ground and had a first row view on the scoring of the opposite team. And then, one of the opponents told him “Stay down kid”.
That’s what football does to you. The word “kid” was now embedded as the worst curse, the worst way to communicate with him. He would always feel weird an uncomfortable when older people will call him like that. He would feel weird, even when his uncle told him “We did it kid”, after signing his first contract in Canada. Even worse, when the coaching staff happily welcomed him in the Montreal United training centre, saying “welcome on-board kid”.
Football is what shapes Kofi’s character, what makes him hate and enjoy things in life. And it sounds weird for an outsider or for someone that does not actually love something. But when there is something that gets you up in the morning, as beautiful as the king of sports, when your passion is finally the way to spend your day, yeah, a word as simple as “kid” is enough to ruin your day.
